Hmm, but the current left wing government just let offenders get away with it without deterrent!!!

Perhaps if the theif was looking at the prospect of a stint in a tough jail then the money for the taking wouldn't have appeal.

The wife and I visited Shanklin on the Isle of Wight once, where the original village jail is still there to look at. There were original stocks and shackles in it too. The cell was simply a small room with vertical bars in place of one wall, and it is right in the main part of town. There were information boards around it telling you about the history. Apparently a petty thief, for example someone who stole one apple from a market stall, would spend the weekend in there either in the stocks or shackled to the wall. It was a routine part of village life for the folks to come to the jail on saturday afternoons to throw things at the occupant, or poke them with sticks. Then on Sunday evening they'd be released.

I reckon if we had that sort of thing it would solve many problems. People would think twice before they stepped out of line, because the humiliation would be far worse than the physical suffering, which in itself would be bad enough, we wouldn't have the problem of overcrowded jails because you wouldn't need long sentences to get the point across, and it would save billions of taxpayer's pounds.

The disgusted locals here have given donations to make up fo the theft (more so) which is helpful for the Vets but in a way by publishing that fact in the paper it must tell the thief that there is enough money around not to miss what he stole.

I doubt that the thief will be bothered to read the local paper strongy. You should write in and appeal for everyone who attended the event sent in all their photos. There would be a chance someone snapped the thief in the background, and some of the locals probably have a good idea of who might be responsible anyway and ID him. Even if it didn't work it would give him a few sleepless nights in case he does read.

Unless it was a holidaymaker (or 'Yokel' as father-in-law used to call them).

My other half was born and bread and Weymouth and his Mum and one sister still lives there so we often visit. From April - October its packed with strangers ... so its possible that its not even someone that anyone would recognise or know anyway.

Strongy - I hear your also having problems down there with a burial site that just been discovered on the road they are trying to build for the olympics ? I know other half said he is not sure how they got planning permission anyway as the road building was blocked years ago over a tree preservation order ..... so this is surely going to stop it once again ?

    Holidaymakers here are 'Grockles'.:D

Most folk here reckon it was a local but yes it could be anyone.

The road is going ahead Sam, The bones from the site are being taken to Oxford (i think) for examination. The 'tree problem' was just that they started to clear before they had the ok from English Heritage which was resolved.:)

Ahhh maybe thats what he called them then. Thought it was Yokels but he past away 2 years ago and never heard anyone else use that expression before ..... he moaned all summer long about them though cause the traffic becomes so bad !

The entry to that road off the roundabout has been closed off ever since I met other half, 7 years ago so be nice to see them do something with it at last! will certainly make our trip down there a bit easier - 7 hour round trip for sunday lunch lol

Other half still insists Weymouth is one of the safest places to live though and swears by his phrase of "the worse crime that happens in Weymouth is drive by name calling" :)

Shame someone did such an awful thing though. Same happened up here last year with a very old blind man collecting money. He put his tin down to do something and someone took it but because obviously he couldnt see it ... he didnt realise it was missing for a little while. They stoke it right in front of him though!

They did catch the young lad who was responsible thankfully - who was not a local. Had just arrived in the country and was staying here with friends who are also very well known for being in trouble with the police.

Hi Dai. I live on a Council Estate as well:wink:. I wouldn't like to tell you what I am.:lollol:

We have drug-users (I'm one, I smoke:wink:) but we don't have junkies. They don't commit petty theft to pay for their gear. That's what I meant. Can't believe you thought I was a snob. ME. :hehe::D:D

I live on an estate it's full of junkies and s----hawks I am out early taking the dog out at 3:30-4:00 in a morning the other morning I was approached by a girl in her pyjamas telling me she was" off her cake"and did I have any money, last Sat passed a couple of ner do wells hoods up scarf across their faces one either side of the street looking at cars and up peoples drives they looked about 15 or 16, I never see a police patrol car these little oiks should be stopped searched and have to explain what they are doing. As Caj suggests it might be worth putting this in the pests & diseases section to see if anyone can come up with a cure.

I can't believe it either. What is this country coming to? Nostradamus (sp) has predicted the world will end in Dec 2010 or is it 2012. From a selfish point of view I won't be sorry to see the end of it, although I'm sure it will survive and just re-invent itself again.

    cheers
