The 2012 thing is just to do with the ancient Mayans whose calendar system could only count that far. It is a Mayan version of the Millenium bug where all our computer systems were supposed to go mad at the stroke of midnight on 1/1/2000.

Exactly, there have been shows over here about it.

Now can someone tell me what that wooden thing is in the picture?

They're called stocks. The punishment Clueless mentioned in the post before was what they were used for.

Now they're just decoration in picturesque village settings. Ironic as they were associated with a lot more violence. That pic was taken in Stow-on-the-Wold.

Except they didn't!:D Nostrodamus is dubious at the best of times, especially as there are so many translations (and therefore interpretations) available, not surprising, as he was writing (or ranting, depending on your point of view) centuries ago.

That's because programmers all over the place (myself included) worked insane hours in the last few months of 1999 to make sure nothing happened when the century ticked away:) A consortium of recruitment agencies even set up a register of programmers that were willing to abandon their millennium celebrations to shoot off to some office at no notice to fix anything that had been missed, and hourly rates reached about £1000. I put my name on that register (who wouldn't? with that sort of rate I could afford to have a monumental blowout for me and all my mates after just an hour's work). Sadly I didn't get called up:(

Penny, here are some more stocks in Southgate, North London near where I lived as a lad.
    Wish they had them here!

How strange, Claire .... t'other half used to stay at The Last Drop Village on business trips .. he says about 6 weeks in total over a nine-month period when he was installing a system at a Renault dealership there. I don't think he was in the stocks though .... :hehe:
