Had a strange man knocking on the front door wheeling a crow bar!!
Lucky it was the neighbour who own's a house But rent's it out, and i only met a few times in 10 years
" i'm looking for the stop tap to the house have you any idea where it is please"
Well, i do know roughly where it mite be, so we go looking, after 3 minutes we found it :dbgrtmb: but with every thing around here it's not in a place you would first head for  luckly with me i make mentle note's ie like blue or red spray paint etc on the roads when there is road works so i roughly knew where the water pipe was :) so then it was a find the stop tap from there which luckly was only 10 feet from where i thought it was,

If you don't know where your stop tap is please go a find it so if you have a problem you can go straight to it, and make sure it still works if you haven't use it in a while

I share mine with next door, it's outside their house on the pavement (well, under the pavement to be precise).
My house is in a row of semis and that's how they were built here in times gone by.

I have isolation 'things' on the bath, sink, toilet etc inside the house so that if I need work done on any of them nothing else (including my next-door neighbours) need be disturbed.

If they need work done however, they have to turn the main stop tap off, so my water goes off too :heehee:

We have the water authority's main stopcock outside in the footpath but quite some years ago they had to run a new plastic pipe from that to replace the old lead pipe that had given up the ghost! They ran the new pipe to the front of the house whereas the old pipe used to run under the house into the kitchen at the back.

I had to have the pipe plumbed into our house from there. It was a fairly simple job (for a plumber) who ran it up the corner of a brick pillar on the house, into the loft and connected to the old rising main. :blue thumb: He then boxed in the pipe outside and filled it with lagging and made a lift off panel just above ground level with a stopcock in it. That is simple to get to whereas the old house stopcock was in the traditional place of under the kitchen sink - right at the back by the wall. Nowadays I wouldn't be able to reach that so I'm happy where it is. :)

They originally came along because I said there is a leak underground somewhere. I proved it to them by digging a hole 18" deep in the front garden and it filled with water :hate-shocked:. They spent three days trying to find the leak with their machine that they wave around (the front garden is approx. 100ft x 90ft) but couldn't find it .

So we asked a retired friend of ours who used to have water divining as a part time job. He found what he said was the site of the leak in 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the water authority decided that they would replace the whole pipe with plastic anyway. They took another three days to run the new pipe as they had to use a 'mole' ( Impact moles are driven through the ground by compressed air and as a result, require minimal excavation) to run the pipe underground - from the road and under hedges, flower beds, driveway and lawn). They had fun and games because they had to dig some holes to 'catch the mole' and make sure it hadn't been deflected by obstructions. That was made more difficult by the holes filling with water. :heehee:

They dug one of the holes where our friend had said the leak was and they found the lead pipe was split there :noidea: :).

I must say that the men did a good job, were very careful with the garden and were cheerful all the time. I suppose plying them with regular tea and cakes all day and sandwiches at lunchtime helped. :loll:

It makes me happy giving cuttings etc to people, it's something I enjoy doing ... and my garden-helping lady left here yesterday with a box full of cuttings and small rooted plants. She said she'll be paying me soon :heehee:
She said that out of all the gardens she goes to, she only enjoys two of them, and one of those is mine.
She said most of them are boring and all she does is mow lawns or trim hedges, but she said my garden is interesting. Wouldn't that make one happy :dbgrtmb:

My landline is working again, after two weeks and a day :dbgrtmb:
It was not Vodafone's fault after all. They called it a 'service outage' and it affected nearly 300 houses. Openreach have fixed it at last.

Since it wasn't Vodafone's fault, and I've had several very informative and appologetic emails from them, I have decided to remain with them rather than find another provider, as I had intended doing. It will work out cheaper.

My new mobile can now be swtiched OFF, and used to summon help in an emergency when I'm out.

I've tried everywhere locally to get some Erythronium bulbs, but had no luck at all.
This morning I found a nice collection of them on line and have ordered them, with Hayloft - 3 yellow 3 mauve and 3 white in the collection ... I am happy :dbgrtmb:
Can't wait to get them now !

Vodafone are giving me a refund for the two weeks my landline wasn't working, and they are also giving me £25.00 off my next bill for the inconvenience it has caused :dbgrtmb:
I am also on their 'vulnerable' list because of my age and because I've told them I rely more on the landline than the mobile ... so if something goes wrong with the landline in the future, they will treat it as urgent.

                        Thats good news Michael. :)

We had my Dad put on the vulnerable list .

We were also on ' some type of list' a few years back for our landline ( we use to have a lot of issues) as we needed to keep in contact with vulnerable family members who might require our assistance...my Dad and brother.
We find phone companies are very obliging when there's a valid reason for requesting a priority listing. :):blue thumb:

I think a lot of the service companies have vulnerable lists.
I'm apparently on the water company one.
When they set up places giving out water due to problems I get mine delivered.

I've been on the vulnerable list of all the utilities for some years. That happened when the Fire Service came to do a free safety check on our house - the check was offered at a local exhibition of services - and they put us, automatically on the list. :noidea:

I don't feel the least bit old, helpless and incapable but Mrs Shiney might disagree  :roflol:

I don't usually, and I am not, but thinking of being on a vulnerable list doesn't help. Most of the time I don't think about it though.
