Can you not have a broadband connection without a phone then?

When the covid isolation started last year we started getting milk delivered. For the first time in 25 years. The GKs also had it delivered, our granddaughter and grandson were amazed you could get milk in a glass bottle. Also you need to wash and return them, alien idea in our throwaway society.

Can also be via fibre, satellite, mifi, tethering, and some other methods.

We receive almost 300 calls and make at least 300 every month, on the landlines (we have two lines). :noidea:

We also couldn't have internet without it - nor our alarm system. There is no cable and we don't want satellite. I also understand that mobile connection around here is not good. With tethering - the farmers round here sometimes tether their livestock. :heehee:

I think JWK could have been talking about the VirginMedia connection. To take the broadband package you must take the landline phone. We have the fibre broadband, tv and land line phone ( also we use Virgin mobiles, but they are separate). Very pleased with the Virgin speed and reliability:blue thumb: Although on Facebook some in our area moan about it going down and other problems, for us its nearly perfect.

Yes we are with Virgin Media, Harry. Technically we don't need a phone line as the Virgin cable has separate wires for broadband and phone, we lost our phone connection a few weeks ago when the cable was accidentally damaged in the street. It made no difference to our broadband. But you can't get a Virgin package that excludes a phone rental charge. It's a money making exercise.

But do any broadband suppliers actually offer a package that is without a phone?

Yes, Three.co.uk has a box you just plug in and it's ready. No landline, no mobile phone required, it just connects to mobile network so there needs to be coverage in your area. At a bit over £20 a month with next day delivery it's really good.

I had it for some months when we were moving house and it was that easy.

I wish I had taken it to have second broadband in the house when the lockdowns started and we moved working and studying from home. Simultaneous video calls are a bit much to our BT broadband and wifi. The price would have been 1/3 of my monthly bus ticket I haven't needed.

Think this is called "MiFi" - sounds OK as quick way to get online, maybe good for a student but the data charges look high and would there be enough bandwidth for watching smart TV, Netflix, playing games and the like, I am not sure.

As you know, I don't know much about mobile/wifi systems but do they charge you for how much you use it as well as a monthly charge? My landline rental comes with broadband and unlimited data and calls (not international calls).

Just had to look MiFi up! So it is actually like a mobile router. But most mobile phones these days can be set up as a Mobile Hotspot (don't ask me what that means). So the MiFi units are becoming less popular.

Basically it means you phone can act as a wireless router and give your PC or TV internet connection via mobile data. Wouldn't recommend though, because it eats a lot of bandwidth which doesn't come cheap.

                          Funny story:
A colleague of mine signed a phone contract back in 2009 or so when mobile data was a new thing. They gave him "unlimited" data volume (terms and conditions capped it at one Terabyte (Edit: which is a LOT)) for his mobile phone.
Nowadays those contracts are worth hundreds of Euros per month but since he never cancelled it he still has almost unlimited power. But the phone company sure tried to lure him with lots of free stuff if he would reconsider....
He actually uses his power a lot during trips to provide free WiFi for friends and colleagues in the vicinity.

I think the key word is 'unlimited' - that's what I have with my Virgin media contract. There are cheaper broadband contracts around that cap the amount of data, once you go over you start paying extortionate fees. With mobile phone contracts the price goes up the more data you opt for, there are so many variations. Some of my ex-colleagues were paying £60 or more a month for their mobiles! I use Three 'Pay as you Go' and hardly use any data because I just connect to my Virgin media WiFi at home and when out of the house I don't bother unless there is a free hotspot.

I've only got 1GB of data on my phone, but unused data rolls over every month.
Never download any thing just a bit of web surfing when I'm out somewhere, but also connect to the wifi at home most of the time.
