Yup, I agree. No point in forcing yourself to do something for the sake of it.

During that bad winter a few years ago, I lost some fantastic plants (pushing the boundries with tropicals I guess) and was totally disheartened.
Didn't bother with my garden for 2 years. But the break did me good and I am now full of enthusiasm.

I know where you're coming from mate - my garden is a mess at the moment. There's so much to do and what with having a bad shoulder for ages I've lost my motivation and let it go. I've kept the pots and borders watered so nothing dies and the grass gets cut but the borders are another matter. I've also become a 'collector' of plants, so ended up with far too many pots for the garden and although I've given quite a few away, I've still got too many so need to get rid of some.

I also got downhearted because I've scattered loads of seeds and hardly any of them have come up - I was hoping for a front garden full of colour but it didn't happen. What happened was that because I didn't know whether what was growing was a seed or a weed, I ended up with lots of ugly stuff I didn't want and which I didn't like looking at.

So I decided to buy some bedding plants to liven it up a bit and yesterday for the first time in ages I went out there for an hour and pulled ugly stuff up/planted bedding plants. It looks better now so has given me some impetus.

I've made a list of what needs doing and split it down into small jobs so that I can tick them off on the list as they're done, which will give me a sense of achievement.

Keep going mate, just tackle a small bit at a time, even if it's only a metre of the border. Once you see how good that looks you'll want to do a bit more and before you know it the garden's so much nicer.

All in all, it sounds rather like it wants a shed with a still in it to me.

Can I have some pics of the areas please?!

Keep going and give it another go with some plants slugs tend not to eat :)

I have similar problems and snails are here in insane numbers for a tiny back garden. I'm hoping that next year when the plants are bigger the problem will be much smaller. I'm keeping going with my beer trap regime to keep numbers down this year though it feels never ending.

Slugs have been terrible this year due to regular rain during spring and early summer which has enabled them to keep busy. Often we have a very dry spell in April or May which curtails their activities until seedlings and shoots have grown a bit.

              Clueless, what's mucky beer?

I've mentioned in other threads but as well as beer traps, I've had success with containers with copper tape. And making copper rings out of copper take and 3 inches of cola bottle cutout with copper take around for the flower beds.

Its started. I mixed up some Round Up and just had a nice leisurely wander around just leisurely spraying things at random. I was a tiny bit careful not to spray anything I actually wanted to keep. I'll do it a few more times over the next couple of months, then clean it all up, and I'll have something to work with for next year:)
