‘The thinner tree was cut years ago and the big one has been holding and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn’
Inosculation is a natural phenomenon in which parts of two different trees, commonly but not exclusively the same species, grow together, self grafting and sharing nutrients
The term emanates from latin- ōsculārī, to kiss

I have seen that picture before, I was reading some time ago about a group of conifers where some amongst them had been cut down, the stumps didn't regrow but they healed over the cut surface with new bark, the only explanation was that the roots of the trees had all grafted themselves together, underground, and the whole group was effectively one tree.

Might be of interest as to why US and Canada climate zones never really fit Europe and vice versa.

US and Canada superimposed over Europe mostly.

It is 700 years old and is located in Portugal. It is the oldest oak tree in Europe.

Sun set today at 1 minute past noon in Nuorgam, Finland.

Sun will rise again on 19th January, 11.49am.

The interesting thing is that it's not totally dark but more blue. :)

Lovely picture. I had a friend in America who was brought up in Alaska, where I think similar occurs.

That is a sudden change in day length of 59 minutes in one day on 19th Jan, or am I reading it wrong?

Things move fast near the pole, days lengthen (and shorten) in mighty hops. The sun doesn't go up that much, it's just a bright sliver in the horizon and then goes down again.

But anyways, its above the horizon and that's what counts :)

I grew up in the south where we don't have proper polar night but some daylight hours through the winter, but obviously they occurred near the noon when you were at school or work. And in the south of Finland full winter snow is not guaranteed and that's when it gets really dark.

Most people I know have those daylight lamps they light in the morning to get their melatonin going, apparently it's really helpful.
