    Woo - why does the sun not appear as a perfect disc in sunrise pics?

    I wondering about that whilst looking at some of my own yesterday and thinking I'd done something wrong, then see the same in #43 above.

    Hi Scrungee the answer is I am not sure,I do know that the Sun is not perfectly round,it could also be that I use a wide angle lens,or it could be that my photos are suffering from camera shake:rolleyespink::) Here are two I took early this morning,but thank you for your question it has got yours truly thinking:)

      My money is on solar flares. There has been a lot of them lately and they jet out for huge distances then curves as the suns gravity pulls them back.

        I think the apparent odd shape of the sun when low in the sky is due to atmospheric distortion, possibly the same effect that makes stars appear to 'twinkle' sometimes at night.
        Don't really understand the science behind it, but found a good explanation, along with a superb photo sequence here:
