No, all valid points Sheal:dbgrtmb: Difficult to tell the whole story just from looking, the proof of the pudding would be to get up into the roof space, look at the timbers, look for remains of thatch sat on the wall plates etc.

The outbuilding has 2 different size shingles, the 2 thirds on the right being bigger.

The bigger ones are lightly to be original, the smaller ones are more lightly to have been reclaimed from higher up, whether from the same building or the main house.

The division could suggest the outbuilding was divided into different ownership at some stage.

If I were re roofing it I would have done the whole lower course in the big shingles, then finished with diminishing sizes as I worked up.

Its very common for materials to be re used on outbuildings when upgrades are done on the main house. When we look for historic glass, we look "out & up"

Out to the out buildings & up to the less important windows in the main house.

Good point about the larger shingles, I agree they are likely to be original, purely because they look the same as those on the house.

I'll meet you there to have a look in the roofspace, probably have to do it at night though so we don't get caught. You can climb into the roofspace while I hold the torch. :roflol:

I love old buildings, they hold so much history and plenty of tales to tell as well. The book I'm reading by the way is by Daniel Defoe and it's about the south west in the 17th century. :)
