"can you keep a blog private all the time?"

Probably depends on the particular Blog-brand you are using, but the "brand" I use can be set that way.

"I guess though, if you were going to do that, that you would just do a word document or something."

Indeed, if its only for oneself a Word DOc will do. However:

"There must be more advantages to 'blogging', what are they?"

You can give friend & family password access to the "private" blog; also you can have multiple authors - so all family members, or somesuch. Have access to it youself from any PC - which might make it better than a Word DOC. And any material in it is backed up by the folk that host the blog, so possibly more robust than a home PC in that regard.

I have lots of private pages in my blog - jobs I've done, notes about this any that, images that I ahve uploaded because I want to display them in THIS forum ;) family / private stuff that is password protected that I can give access to friends only (I aim to be very circumspect about photos and details of my family on the web).

By the by, I also have a Flickr account that enables me to put photos on the web, but I only do that password-protected and give friends "day passes".

But you are right, the idea of a blog is to make it public; friend and strangers can see it and leave comments. But in a way I am not a big fan of that, why wouldn't you use a forum, like this, for feedback and discussion? Beats me how blog-comments are better than this forum. Folk leave comments, but they have to bother to come back and read any followups etc., the converstaions in the comments have no strucutre - so are much harder to follow that the thread in a forum like this, and so on. So other than your mates saying "Great article borrowers" or somesuch, I see no point in that. But I'm clearly in the minority on that, but then I don't have a facebook account either!!

Slightly different tack: for anyone who is a half decent wordsmith the likihood is that they will get a "following". So a bunch of folk read their blog now and again. So NOW they can have adverts, get affiliate income from links that they choose to endores, and the whole ensaladas :thumb:

Just a thought - would anyone care to have a forum for blogs here?
