Anyone grafting Heirloom onto "strong rootstocks"?

I was reading in another forum of some heirloom varieties that are tasty, but make weedy plants only forming a couple of trusses, and that just grafting them onto any-old-strong-variety as a rootstock (assuming no soil-disease problems to overcome) might give you very tasty Toms ... and in abundance :)

No idea! Only that it didn't specifically need to be a disease resistant one (the seed for them is quite expensive)

Moneymaker perhaps? Maybe that is why seed for them sells so well each Spring - people can't surely be growing them for their bland-tasting fruit can they? :heehee:

At the moment I'm just grafting onto potatoes and when I get my tomatoes to a reasonable grafting size I'll be grafting onto what ever I have that suits...At the moment I'm still practising and want to get the grafting techniques off to a fine art, just to see if I can so I'm not unduly concerned about the rootstock at present ,plus I grow in pots so I'm not too concerned about soil born disease resistance just yet...it is fascinating seeing the different root structures though...Last year I was amazed at the difference:blue thumb:

Loli, all my first batch of grafts have failed. I reckon I started too soon, the rootstock were too spindly and withered away. I should have looked back at my previous years photos instead of relying on my memory. So I'm onto my second batch, this time I left the plants till they were a bit bigger. I'll get a photo later to show what they look like.

I'm not trying the twin grafts, I did see some in a GC at £3.99 which seemed reasonable value but it looks quite a tricky technique so I'll not have a go yet.

The problem I have is remembering to look back at last year's photos ... but I guess that is where you came in? :heehee:

                    I'll ask and report back.

This is one from my second batch, now 7 days since grafting. One thing I have learnt (and remembered to do!) is to sow a few rootstock/scions every few days, then I've got a range of sizes to choose from:

Hi Loli, the scion is Black Cherry in that photo. My other grafts are Gardener's Delight, New Girl & Sungold.
