If you mean me @Baalmaiden - then yes, my daughter works for a supermarket, and used to bring Piccolos home. I couldn't believe how expensive they were! Those 'on the vine ones'.

Someone said to me a while ago that they get grown from seed and should be fine, but I think he missed the point about them being saved from a s'market packet.

I've grown a piccolo from seed saved from supermarket fruit and they did alright for me.
But obviously they were not F1 anymore and I had nothing really to compare them with ie. the true F1 piccolo.

I trust you are aware that saving seeds from any F1 plant is not likely to produce the exact same crop another year, those who save their own seeds generally always avoid F1 seeds/plants, you will get a crop, but it won't be the same. Growing from fruit you have bought can mean you do not know if the seed was F1 or not.

The other big risk with growing seed from shop bought fruit is they may be unsuitable varieties for our climate.

Mine are grown undercover, so it's not too big a problem, although I did get a decent crop of those Piccolos that I had outside. Just an experiment.
It was our hottest/driest summer on record in this part of the country, last year.

It’s obviously a gamble sowing seeds from bought in veg but it’s can be fun and doesn’t cost anything other than a little time and growing space.

I’ve got supermarket garlic growing well, although it is an IOW variety so slightly nearer to home than lots of suppliers. It will be interesting to see how my supermarket tomato seeds do in year 2.

I think it's a case of not putting all your efforts into supermarket plants and obviously grow mostly what I would call normal varieties.

When I see all the weird and wonderful tomato varieties that people are growing these days a couple of plants grown from supermarket fruit seed seems hardly taking a risk.

I do the same as you @Butterfly6 with garlic, it is unreasonably expensive in garden centres. I actually keep a few cloves to plant for next year and refresh every few years.

That's the last lot sown. More varieties than I have space to put them, but I'll hone down my selection as I go and give away the surplus. Screenshot_20240326-152845.png

As it is snowing around us, but not in the village, I am not in a rush to sow tomato seeds just yet, it will be a couple of weeks at least.

Yes - snowing and sleeting here earlier too @burnie. I sowed my toms yesterday, but they'll be in the kitchen for a long time.
I think you had a fair bit of our 'west side' weather last year too - late summer into autumn and winter, which was a major problem for farmers. Hopefully, it won't be like that this year in your area.

Very cold here today. I'd been able to put my little toms out in the greenhouse during the day for the past few days, bringing them in at night, but today they are staying snuggled up above a radiator on the kitchen windowsill!!
