My daughter tells me she won't get round to side shooting the tomato plants I gave her. I said she will get a bush with more but smaller tomatoes but I'm guessing really. I might put a couple of spare Rosella plants in the garden and let them go to see what happens. I've heard you can grow Sungold as a bush and she has that one, also Honeymoon and Prima Bella. What do you guys think?

Yes - I guess it wants to grow to 15ft and as we restrict the growth it tries other more interesting ways to grow.
I find new side shoots appearing on some of mine where I've already removed them weeks ago.
I get new plants growing on the end of a truss often too at the end of the season
They really really want to grow :)

They become a tangle of stems, leaves and unripe fruit. The beefsteaks like honeymoon have such heavy fruit it will become difficult to support them through the tangle with trusses snapping off. Air won't circulate so diseases will spread. I remember trying to sort out my Dad's tomatoes after he was incapacitated and it quickly became a jungle.

I've given up giving tomato plants to my daughter. If she even gets as far as planting them it's a miracle. :noidea:

I think she might do a bit to support them so we'll see what happens. To be fair she is very busy.

A couple of Maskotka might suit her next year. I grow one for a friend every year. Easy, productive and yummy.

Not really a growing one but a happy tomato reply from someone thsts not grown them before.

Our neighbour was away in Australia for 3 months so I grew plenty of extra things in their greenhouse this year and managed to get 50 tomatoes ready for a charity sale last weekend. It was a nice surprise because all but one had sold on the day because people thought they were different varieties to the norm. I didn't think they were that weird but apparently brandy wine pink, indigo pear drops, tigerella and sun baby aren't common round these parts.
The sale made £1600, the vast majority from the saints that run it, which was quite pleasing.

Never heard of it, does it involve training side shoots. I suppose it could be like having two leaders from a single plant, that works OK.

Not fan-training but I once left a Black Cherry totally unpruned and tied each side-shoot in to the trellis as it became big enough. It looked very handsome.
