Tomato Growing 2024

I grew Happy day a couple of years ago, outside, and it was fairly late, not tried it since.

 

This is crackers for the time of year. We're forecast 7°. I've just been out and fleeced everything I can.

 

Trellis, fleece, clothes pegs... what could possibly go wrong?

 

@JWK best thing about my greenhouse is the automatic Baylis vents. I don't have to try and predict whether it's going to be too hot - they just do it. Shame I can't have them on the Louvre vents too.

 

We had the lowest +7.5c this night. For my small greenhouse (6×8 ft) it doesn't make any difference if I keep window and door closed or opened. It heats and cools down along the outside t. I keep everything open, and have 2 panes of glass taken out for summer. So it's more protection from the wind and rain only. If we get very hot weather I add a shading.

 

This morning I put fleece over my outside tomato and cucumber plants as the weather is getting bitterly cold.
The outside temp is 13C but thankfully there protected from high winds.

 

I know we are getting colder nights at the moment but those minimum temperatures are short lived if we get sunny mornings, which seems to be about all we can hope for this year.

The air temperatures are low but hopefully the short nights mean the compost is above air temps.

 

Thanks @JWK - I assumed because the louvres had a rather positive action handle, that a Baylis wouldn't work

 

I retro fitted an auto opener on the louvre of my Allotment greenhouse. I think it depends on how the actuator links to the opening lever.

 

I've been tidying my Roma tomatoes this morning, they've grown very messy with the warmth and the rain, side shoots aplenty, some i leave and tie onto the cross supports for extra fruits.
