    @daisym don't pinch out the top until it is about 5 ft tall and has several trusses of tomatoes. The side shoots, as I said before, are the ones to pinch out. They will take strength from the plant and should be pinched out when small. Unless it is a bushy variety like those used for hanging baskets.

      @daisym

      As it was a volunteer it's difficult to guess if it's a cordon or bush type, by the photo it looks like a cordon to me and should have the side shoots pinched out.

          I'm not sure @Busy-Lizzie can do tomatoes form seed given her travel commitments @floralies but Graines Baumaux is indeed a good site for seed porn.

            The only way round that @Busy-Lizzie is to get a friend to sow them for you and have them ready for you to plant out! :heehee:

              I would take out any side shoots (suckers) and the top tip if you have another truss there (can't tell from pic). This time of year 2 trusses would be enough for it.

                  @Busy-Lizzie @JWK Many thanks both. The plant is about 3ft so point noted. I will pinch out the strong side shoots this afternoon.

                    Thanks @DiggersJo. I have just been out to have a look. There are more flowers forming at the top of the main stem Only one of the five or six side-shoots is coming from below ground. Is that what you mean about suckers? Or should I take off all the side shoots?
                    It seems to be growing at an amazing rate!

                    They grow between the main stem and leaf nodes and sometimes get very big.

                      Had to chuck another bucket of water in to cool things down then followed up with the mister on the hose. Might look at getting some permanently installed

                      Tomato suckers are what Americans call side shoots :dbgrtmb:
