Brought 2 carboard boxes from lidl to move tomatoes pots in. :) If I continue to keep my plastic boxes on the sun, they going to deteriorate under uv impact.

      Afternoon all,

The time has come to pot on a few tomato plants.
      Something I have always wondered:
Is there a risk from bacteria from the compost entering the open wounds (where lower leaves have been cut off) when burying deeply? If so, would it be better for lower leaves to be removed X days prior to re-potting to allow them to heal first?

Or should I just go ahead and cut off and plant immediately like I always do!

I'm leaning towards the latter simply due to impatience, but will hold off if best.

I've never thought about that @THFC. I guess there must be a small risk, then again if bad bacteria was in the soil it would find other ways to infect the plant.

I just snap the lower leaves off rather than cut, maybe that is better.

        Cheers JWK.
I've always wondered, but never took such a precaution.

I'll go ahead as I've always done then!

Read back a few pages and was interested to read comments about Gardeners delight.
          Mine are pathetic!
          I sowed;
          G.D.
          Tigerella
          Sungold
          principe Borghese
on 23/2. Identical compost, heated propagator etc.
The GD are small, weedy and unimpressive, with poor germination. I have passed my comments on to DT Brown seeds.
Even last year's Black cherry, sown later, have overtaken them.
All, except the GD, are now in 1.5 L pots.
          Unimpressed!

Took them all down to the allotment greenhouse a couple of days ago as the forecast for overnight lows were about 7c or 8c. Of course now it's different, with 3c to 5c for the next week. Typical.

They can learn to like it because I'm not going to bother taking them back home!

Do any of the supermarkets have interesting varieties for outdoors? Garden centre ones were all unappealing. I have nagina and merry gold.

I have potted on my tomatoes today. I put a couple in the cold frame but the rest are back indoors. Red Dragon, Oh Happy day and Balcony Red.

My mate said to me that when you get older your taste gets less,
                is this true for Tomatoes?
I'm only growing: Rubylicious, Rosella, Alisa Craig & Shirley.

                  Tomato advice needed.
What is going wrong with these scrawny little things? They seem completely stunted. I started them off in see modules and they germinated really quickly I was super impressed. Then they got to about 2 inches tall so I moved them into bigger pots. Ever since they’ve not budged.
They’ve have been on a heated mat set at 20 degrees since being planted. They are in a plastic greenhouse inside my glass lean-to. They are in good “seedling” compost, watered regularly. They do lean towards the sun so I rotate them every couple of days to try and keep them straight. is it a matter of patience?

My guess is that you have moved them up a bit too early. They are sitting making roots, they should grow away when they are ready.
I have always found this a conundrum, they say this happens when you overpot any plant, and you should just go up the next size and then again etc. Yet when you put a plant in the ground theoretically it has an infinite size pot. That said even when you plant out sometimes they take a week or so to establish and grow away.

@Novice Gardener Laura They look a bit anaemic to me, perhaps they might need a weekly water with some dilute feed or seaweed tonic.

Spent the afternoon potting on tomatoes using a mix of multipurpose and garden soil.

I think my taste has deteriorated as I get older @john558, it wasn't very good in the first place. I can still taste the difference between supermarket tomatoes and home grown though.

What could this be on my tomato plant leaves?
Not affecting all varieties i have planted, the one pictured is Sungold.
                            Otherwise plants looking healthy
Not planted out in polytunnel yet, still indoors but leave them out in a sheltered porch during the day
