Me too FC. My 9 indoor Maskotkas (description=Dwarf, compact basket variety) are now 13 inches tall and I can just see the beginnings of the first flowers deep inside the growth stem. I don't know how to stop them either!!:wallbanging:

Glad I am not alone:biggrin: - to be honest, I am really chuffed with myself that I have so many plants that seem healthy sitting about the house, not least that I grew them from seed. I've spotted a few flowers in the tomatoes, right at the top - and seem to be removing male flowers from the cucumbers on a daily basis (although that is a whole different thread!)

No use whatsoever BUT the only good thing about a growbag is the profit it makes for its producer!

Bucket with holes drilled into bottom, compost fill, plant and "hey presto"

        "Simples"

More use than you might think! My polytunnel simply sits on a corner of the patio (the patio is stupidly large at this house, and has a 10x8 shed and a 10x8 polytunnel sat on one side which only takes up a third of the patio area at most) - buckets (or large pots) for the tomatoes might be just the dab for me :) Presumably, peppers and cucumbers would be equally at home as long as they were supported

Go to Morrisons,( possibly tesco asda etc), They sell the large flower buckets,8 for 99p

Carefull drilling holes in the base as they can split, best to use a bradawl or burn holes in (The buckets are usually below the table in the fresh cut flower section, bound in yellow tape in packs of eight)

You can cut a growbag in half, and stand each half "on end" to make two "pots" for Tomatoes, if you like. That will give you a nice deep "pot". Make sure they don't topple over though! A Tomato plant fully laden with fruit is very heavy, and unstable ...

Or use some other sort of pot, and tip the contents of the grow bag into it - I have used grow bags as a source of compost, in this way, in the past, but only if they worked out cheaper than buying some other form / brand of Multi purpose compost :blue thumb:

I now grow Tomatoes directly in the border soil of my greenhouse (because they need watering less often), but when I grew them in pots I used a 12" diameter pot, so I would be wary of using anything narrower than that.

Another method is to double them up, i.e. have one on top of another. You lay the first growbag down and cut slits in the top. Then cut a number of slits in the upper one and turn it over on top. You plant in the top one as normal, and the tomato roots work their way through both bags. You can tie the two bags together whilst the tomato roots work their way down into the lower bag which clamps them together.

I haven't got a Morrisons locally, and the nearest one is one of those silly wee efforts; I had a look on Wickes website last night, and they do the builders buckets for £1.28 - I used one of them to mix plasterboard adhesive recently, and they are really sturdy, so I think I will go for some of them; I suppose once I've bought them this year, I won't have to again for a good few years. :)

I just had to post back - Jack McHammocklashing, I owe you a huge thank you! I found a Morrisons about 8 or 9 miles away, so decided to whip down and have a look on the off-chance. Although they didn't have any bound up with yellow tape, there were pots under the fresh flower stand, and I ended up buying 25 for four quid! Happy man :)

Better still, I got a couple of nice wee honeysuckles for £1.79 each - bargain! :)

Yeah result, It was Scrungee who put me onto it good in it
Mind about putting holes in the base, bradawl or sharp stanley knife, a drill may split them if you push it through

                Regards

I use a flat wood bit at slow speed with some wood tightly pressed to the other side of the plastic base to prevent the base from breaking up.

Does anybody use these flower buckets around tomatoes with the bottoms completely cut off, as the Sankey ones are over £1 each even at Wilkos.

I've bought loads of the cut flower buckets from Morrisons over the last 18 months, they're approx 5-7 litre size at a guess??

I've had two different sizes, some deeper than others.

I've managed to drill the holes ok, but don't put too much pressure on otherwise they will split as Jack says.

Last time I bought some they were the last spare ones and I got about 15 for £1...:dancy:

Help!! I have pooted on into 13cm x 13cm pots and they are growing into spindly giants. I think that the dull weather hasn't helped but their final place is to be 2 x window boxes under the kitchen window. They have grown disappointingly tall. "Dwarf compact for the patio etc." At least they are all showing first set of flowers now. I'm thinking they may end up in pots on the ground as too tall for window box. :wallbanging::gaah:
