That's true, Sheal. The Supermarkets objects that they pass off as toms are completely tasteless. Once you've grown your own toms and tasted them you'll never want to get them from any where else other than your own Green House.:snork:

I was wondering only this morning why no pics of strange shaped toms had been posted yet. Here's one of my tom oddities

              tom double.jpg

P.S. I found my copy of 'The Tomato Book' (Simpsons Seeds/Tomato Growers Club) that I mentioned in post #954 above, and the 'belt & braces' method of killing off nasties on saved seeds is warming up the seeds in a dilute bleach solution (1:9 thin bleach/water) and keeping at 52 deg C for 15-30 mins, and is done just prior to sowing.

                Thanks John :)

I decided not to bother saving seeds in the end, not least because I found a few other varieties to try in a half price seed sale at my local garden centre. :)

I'm hoping next year is a lot more productive for us all.

I was watching Gardeners World last week, in which they featured Wisley. At one point they showed some Red Pear (or something). Has anyone tried these?

I grew Red Pear in 2009, here's the photo from an old thread:

I grew mine outdoors and they were good, but much smaller than those shown on Gardners World. Maybe it's worth growing them again as Monty raved about them.

                      what a perfect shape!
I saw a similar picture on facebook the other day- there was a bust of a woman looking behind her and then the tomato positioned in a way so it looked like her bottom cheeks...it was really funny!

A few toms from my kitchen:

                        1) Red Alert outdoor bush tomato. If I could only grew 2 varieties they would be Red Alert & Sungold.

                        toms ra.jpg

                        2) Red Robin 300mm/12" high bush tomato - ideal for window boxes & pots, and if grown in the latter can be brought indoors to put on a window cill to continue cropping when it gets too cold.

                        3) Balconi - another mini bush tomato an although it's an F1 I saved seeds from both red and yellow fruits and didn't notice any difference whatsoever between the plants grown from them and expensive F1 seeds bought from T&M.

                        toms b and bf2.jpg

                        4) Koralik - sprawling bush tomatoes with smallish fruits that haven't been touched by blight despite not having been sprayed.

                        toms k.jpg

                        5) Monster - will grow large toms if the trusses are reduced to a single fruit, otherwise about 1+ Kg/truss of 6 oz fruits that make good passata. Both are awaiting seed saving.

                        6) Purple Calabash - more browny red than purple. Also awaiting seed saving + going in my cheese sandwich.
