Like you, I'm using Westland peat free, but mixed with leftover peat based. You're right about the lumpiness. Next time, I'll sieve half a bag for sowing/potting on.

Both seedlings had worryingly bad "helmet head" this afternoon, but I dripped warm condensation onto them from the propagator lid and now one is breaking free. I've just dabbed a bit of spit on the other. My spit is tonight laced with Cotes de Gascoigne. I cannot foresee failure, albeit from halfway down the bottle.

Edit. There were a few "no shows" but most seeds germinated okay in the peat/not peat mix.

 

Tomorrow, all things being well. I will open up the rootrainers my tomato seedlings are growing in & remove the extras that are growing in some of the compartments. These I will move to the compartments where the seeds should have been sown in the first place. As they are still only forming their first true leaves I don't think I will damage them too much nor make them particularly more behind.

I would have done it about two weeks ago but as we had some very cold windy weather I didn't want to risk moving them. Now with a few days of warmer weather expected just before Easter I will move them.

 

you will enjoy them, real old delight tang, compost look a bit coarse for seeds , a sign of the times not much decent stuff around

This afternoon I did what I said I would do yesterday, i.e., open up the rootrainers & move the seedlings around. Seemed like a reasonable idea then but in the practise it was very different! I did open up the containers but it was another matter trying to get the seedlings out without damaging them & putting them in other compartments!

I ended up putting the seedlings in two of the rootrainers in individual 3" pots. Now I have 7 pots with tomato seedlings & two rootrainers with the original seedling unmolested - for the moment!

Haley's Winbox, advertised as a 25cm bush with round, orange fruit, is now 75cm and still growing... and has hairy plums.

My plants are now in their 3" pots and enjoying all this sunlight!

 

Heres my march 13th sowings, they've been under lights on a heat mat set to 10c and outside whenever it is dry enough and above 10c.

The tomato seedlings I potted up individually don't seem to have minded being transplanted from the Rootrainers & are growing well a week later. I'm thinking of doing the same with those that are still in the Rootrainers on Tuesday.

 

I much prefer home grown toms! The supermarket ones are most often bland & tasteless! Unfortunately if we want toms all year round we have to buy them from the supers!

 

Uuugh! Mr Weasels and I are both laid low with Covid, but I've managed to lug my tomato and courgette plants out of the greenhouse every morning and back in every night. It's going to dip down to 6 degrees C tonight so the bubble wrap is back on.
