Tomato Growing Thread 2022

    @JWK thanks John...the plant is now removed and bagged up, will keep an eye on the other 4 in the greenhouse.

    What is the best way to dispose of the plant, I don't think it would be wise to take it to the tip...is burning it an option?

      Burning sounds a good option. I am unsure what happens at the tip, I wouldn't want it to eventually get into compost bags.

        @JWK burning it is then and fingers crossed for the rest of the plants, though I'm not to hopeful.

            I know, John... I can't quite believe it, all the remaining plants are coming on beautifully with loads of fruit, my Super Sweet 100 is looking like it is going to be prolific and the Alicante is very good too.

            But I'm most disappointed about the Beefsteaks, having never grown them before I was very excited to see how they turned out.

            But, I'll try and stay positive until the blight reappears and if it does I'll pull the lot out and sterilise the greenhouse and try again next year, maybe with some blight resistant varieties.

              Today I noticed that two of my Tomato plants had gone all floppy, these are/was in a plastic blow-away house.

              No sign of blight, I have removed both plants and will decide what to do tomorrow.

              Oh and the two plants have not been overwatered.

                      I stopped making Bordeaux Mixture after the first time I mixed it up! Filthy stuff! Suppose if you had a vineyard you could get a serf to mix it! Must be said I never mix Bourdeaux liquids, just drink each bottle in turn!

                        Oh dear @john558 that doesn't look good. Some of mine in 11 litre pots are suffering in this heat, I have made a big mistake by not using bigger pots and they dry out too quickly. It's OK if I can water twice a day. I think it's maybe the same with your plant, you could try standing them in a saucer to keep them topped up.

                          John558, re floppyness: know the condition well! Seriously though it has to be fungal and root affecting? I presume it's not lack of watering? Possibly too much? Has it affected all your plants or just two?

                            Apparently Bordeaux mixture was discovered by accident, French growers sprayed their grapes with a blue dye next to roads and paths to stop passer-bys eating them. Then they gradually realised those vines were much healthier than further in the vineyard. Excessive use of BM will lead to a build up of copper in the soil hence why it was banned here.

                            It's still used extensively in France so avoid any trendy blue wines !

                            I wonder if Aldi sell a blue wine? Perhaps if they did you could spray it onto Toms? You certainly wouldn't want to drink it, unless of course it was a Bordeaux Gin!?

                              Thanks, JWK & Glynne, I took one out of the pot and the compost was dampish, the rest of the Toms are fine.

                              I have disposed of the 2 Toms.
