Red indigo cross was a bit of a disappointment as the anthocyanin expression is very minimal in the fruit this year. The plant stems seems to show it very strongly. However, the direct sun is required to bring this out and the tomatoes were some of the first to ripen on the lower trusses so there is hope yet. We'll see what comes of it, but at the very least it is a strong and resilient growth habit and is the current leader in the height stakes and fertility is good. I suspect resistance to disease is good too.

@JWK yes the antho is a trait taken from its great grandparent an indigo rose. The stems of the plant show that darker colouring quite clearly but last year's fruit had more of the darkness on top and rosy red bottom on the fruit. This year's generation however seem to have lost that somewhat in the fruit. However, this expression also requires some direct exposure to show through, so perhaps, as these were early fruits the others higher up the stem may express it more. Only time will tell. The growth habit I think it taken from the gardeners de!ight parentage. It is a very strong and robust structure and all blossoms seemed to have pollinated where most others have fai!ed in the dry heat spell we had. This plant almost has the determination of a stupice to grow and grow and if the weather holds out I am sure it will find way past 14 foot if not more before frost.

                .
Further to my reply yesterday I thought I would show you a picture (As they say "A picture is worth a 1000 words) so you can see more clearly the space between the plants & the "wall".

Weather is not looking good for blight up here in glasgow. Really humid and wet. Not particularly warm either

I've read it is a good idea to pick beefsteak and oxheart tomatoes before they are completely ripe, as they tend to go mealy quite quick, is that everyone's experience? Also think I might just pull out both costoluto Fiorentino plants I have to give the others more space.

Not heard of that but it makes sense. I've always waited till they are completely ripe.

I fed my toms today with tomato fertilizer for the first time this year. I'd been fertilizing them up till last week with a general fertilizer in the hopes of encouraging the plants to grow after "wilting" knocked them for six. They were growing very nicely again until the extremely hot winds all day Tuesday knocked them for a further six! Now I hope that the new feed will help them to produce more fruits.
