Sevryuga and Cherokee Purple now just starting to ripen. 135 days since sowing and 78 since transplant

I'd have thought azoychka would have also started but no sign yet IMG_20220725_175415206-01.jpeg IMG_20220725_175404463_HDR-01.jpeg

"They are 'Gardener's Delight' & should reach 2m or more in the open ground. Though this year is the first time I've ever grown them in growbags on the balcony I have grown them before when I had an allotment."

I made a mistake when I wrote that as I found out a week ago. I DID grow them on the balcony but back in 2014! I did a search through my photos stored in GPhotos & found I had grown them on the allotment & on the balcony the same year. I also found pictures of a tomato called 'Sunstream'. This was a small heart-shaped plum tomato. Very sweet, if memory serves me well!

We had this tomato as a substitute from a supermarket shop at Christmas 2014. As I liked the taste of the tomatoes I saved the seeds from one fruit before we finished eating them. Later in the year I sowed them in the greenhouse on the allotment.

I found a few photos from the 'gardener's Delight' tomatoes growing on the balcony in 2014:

I don't seem to have many photos so I will have to have a look on Gphotos to see if I can find any more, perhaps a month or two later.

Pride comes before a fall. I accidentally snapped the main stem on one this morning, trying to lower and lay it down against its will:

Some have 12 trusses and have hit the roof once before. My lowering technique needs some improvement.

Just realised HUGE benefit from planting late, don't have this problem of spending all day every day picking tomatoes!!! Seriously don't feel any low self esteem, just accept brilliance of others!!
Years ago when young and active and rock climbing I was told a great story about the great Don Whilans climbing in the Alps and being praised by French climbers for conquering some 'impossible' route. Don said, " it's not me that's good, it's you that's bloody bad!!"

First beefsteak of the year eaten. 280g. I might have a couple that will hit 350g, hard to tell

Fairly mild flavour, on the sweet side. Seeds have been saved IMG_20220726_182006404_HDR-01.jpeg IMG_20220726_182029570-01.jpeg

Noticed some of the big tomatoes on the outside plants are blushing or various stages of ripening. Some are beginning to form cracks and i don't want this to get worse, they are done growing now and with rain and the need to deepwater if rain doesn't fall, they are going to have to come in and ripen in the box. There have been a couple of nights where the wind has been a little higher than I would have wanted as well with a little bit of swaying of the plants. Oh such is the trials of growing outside with the elements.....

Other varieties like cherries and plums and smaller fruits should be okay (as long as we don't get a "Michael fish") and as they haven't stopped the growing phase will be fine to be left.

One bonus, of course, the plants can focus more on developing the fruit higher up with some of the big boys (and girls) gone.

Rosado de ayerbe is the correct name, from the Aragon region I believe

This is garotte bicolour and two others. All were on one cluster, no wonder higher up fruits had slow progress

And dolly parton who came in a few days ago is nearly ripe.

I pulled in a fish lake and seek no further but better examples exist still on the vine.
Still picking more of the usual suspects so will only show new ones

I do save seeds, so if there is any interest in this forum just shout. If you have a greenhouse you have more control, and I know some varieties I did last year did not do well with the cold and rain. This year has been better in some ways but a challenge certainly in watering....but hey the season is not quite over yet. Let's hope for an Indian summer toooooo....
