Thanks so much for that: and there you go. I suspect I will never get anything other than hybrids. Sounds like a lot of hassle there...maybe once you just get used to it? And interesting about the F1s. I thought they were infertile - but there you go. Every day's a learning day...

 

If you keep saving your seeds year after year and in eight or nine generations you still have something that consistently and reliably grows, looks, tastes and resists disease like the original, you've sucessfully dehybridised Sungold F1. And if you could do us all a favour and manage to breed out the splitting tendancy while you're at it, that would be spiffy. No pressure.

I do this every year! Go over the top on tomatoes besides my normal more than enough variety of seeds I’ve been been tempted to try Dwarf tomatoes and I have ordered from Tomatofest 4 more namely Rosella Purple, Uluru Ochre, Tasty Wine, and Beauty King but don’t know where I’m going to put them? (yes I am a bit of a prat) never mind it keeps life interesting eh!

 

12 of the fifteen toms sown wednesday are through and look good the 3 not yet showing are old seed so will give them a couple more days

Left over from last year are:
Black Krim (greenhouse)
Oh happy day (outdoors)
Nagina plum (mainly outdoors but always put 2 in the greenhouse because they really perform in there)
Rugby Pink Plum (greenhouse)
Pink Honeymoon (outdoors)
Cocktail Crush (outdoors). All the outdoor toms are proven blight resistant
One mystery seed which I have no idea of!

first 3 are supposedly blight resistant but I’ll hedge my bets and keep them under some protection for this year I’m doing the rapunzel because it looks cool!

 

I've sown my bush tomatoes:
2 x Veranda Red
2 x Golden Grape
2 x Tumbling Tom Red
2 x Tumbling Tom Yellow

Two of each will be put into large pots with some french marigolds. I'll start sowing the vine tomatoes mid to late March.

 

In your experience Garret what size do these plants grow in pots and what is the taste like

I haven't grown Veranda Red before as it's a new one but it's supposed to be a tasty, compact short one so I'm hopeful. I've grown the others before though.

The tumblers dangle over the sides about 40cm, maybe 20cm in height. The red taste a little bit sharp for me, I prefer the yellow which are sweet and mild.

The golden grape is a determinate which grows upright about 50/60cm and doesn't dangle but has many branches and literally hundreds of fruits the size of gooseberries. They are sweet and very juicy with thin skin.

Sowing today for indoor toms. I have an 8x6, needless to say there will be too many plants and I will have to make a choice in May what to plant!
