If you empty say a 12in pot it usually has roots wound round the outside of the pot, if the plant has been watered well.
I think if you pull them up you probably leave half the root system behind.

Thank you JWK and pete. Shame I didn't make photos, yes, I had some long roots and loads of thin ones stayed in the soil. Huh, hopefully ok then.

I've been told off for not picking the tomatoes. It's got to where there's so many that when you pick one 3 others fall off!

Noticed a couple of days ago nearly all the lower stems of my tomato plants are showing signs of Blight:

          20230930_105303.jpg

Today I noticed Blight has spread to the upper leaves on Sungold, I've stripped off the affected leaves but it's only a matter of time before the plant will give up.

I have been looking a little closer at the tomatoes on the balcony, especially the self-sown one. Now I don't think it is 'Gardeners Delight' but some other variety of cherry tomato. I say that because some of the higher trusses are now longer than the other plants that I know are 'Gardeners Delight'. I've taken some photos but I haven't moved them to the computer yet. Tomorrow I won't be able to do it either so it will have to wait till Wednesday.

I noticed today there are now a lot of ripe toms on the plants that I will need to pick so as to give the green ones a chance to ripen.

Fascinating stuff about folk's thoughts on growing, or at least dealing with problems, found on their Tom's. I suppose it's good to see that there are folk who only grow 3 varieties (like us!) But it's the discovery that (Mr)Shiney, like me dislikes RAW tomatoes, but Mrs Shiney does not, though both enjoy cooked ones. This is exactly the same as myself and THE GARDENER!!! Actually I think she has become excellent at gardening, just as she is about EVERYTHING ELSE SHE DOES!!!

I've just taken a couple of photos of the tomato plants on the balcony, one showing the longer truss on the self-sown tomato and the other showing a truss on one of the Gardeners Delight tomatoes.

I've just had a stagger around the allotment, the Crimson crush are still ripening but the plants are showing signs of blight now.
Just picked my last two Incas from under the rain shelter.
But that's pretty much it for this year now.

I spent the most of the day in the greenhouse. It was summer warm. Put the glass panes back in for winter (had 4 taken out for a better ventilation). Removed top layer of the soil, partially adding into composter and partially spreading in a couple of places in the garden, where I needed to cover some holes.
Then digging, watering and sowing phacelia. Hope squirrels don't dig again.
Approx in February I will add new compost from composter.
Never again I use white fleece for shading, it desintegrates into the dust. Already bought some day curtains (remhants) for the next season.
With regards to removing top layer of compost I did it, because my greenhouse is 2.4 x 1.8 m only, with a path in the middle, so it's not that much to change.

I spent sometime on the balcony this morning & while I was there I picked the toms that were ripe or ripening. I will probably remove the plants at the end of October but until then they can continue to bulk up the fruit & I'll pick whatever ripens so others get a chance before the month comes to an end.

I also took some photos of the plants before they finish. I also took a photo of the toms I picked this morning (half of them have already been eaten!:rolleyespink:)

I cleared a few plants yesterday and did a bit of housekeeping in removing old fallen fruits etc
Next season I think I'll have just one bite size variety plant and the rest as salad and beefsteak types

Quite impressed with the blight resistance of crimson crush, I noticed a touch of blight on some leaves a few weeks ago but it hasn't got any worse and even picked 4 tomatoes today.

Its really soggy over there now but the plants have remained barely touched by blight.

I'll be clearing the plants this weekend. I've had a more than satisfactory first year in the greenhouse even with a late start.
Just some general tidying and tarting up required before getting a bit more soil improver in ready for next season
