Hi, Fred. As JWK has noted, it's a new release from Vital Seeds. A bit of stalking of the company on their Instagram suggests that the unnamed variety they have been dehybridising (of which process Mango Lassi is a result) is Sakura.

The only Mango Lassi I know is the mango yoghurt drink I have most weeks.

Sakura is the Japanese for Cherry Blossom and their traditional song expounding the glory of their national blossom is

Good morning and thank you JWK. Yes, I found that info at Vital Seeds during my search but I wanted to know (hoping anyway) what the original "...popular F1..." was that ML was de-hybridised from. When you can ask Google anything, it seems strange to me that we can't find that info, on the entire internet.

        Many thanks.

Thank you eatenbyweasels. Why didn't I ask you in the first place? I hate my research to come to a dead-stop and you have revived it. Thank you.

Many thanks Shiney. I knew about the Indian yogurt drink but couldn't get any further (than the Vital Seeds lead) with tracking the tomato. I was sure that someone of superior intellect on GC would be able to help and I found there were two of you. Thanks to eatenbyweasels too.

eatenbyweasels, thank you very much for doing that. I don't do instagram but your search shows even more info - 5th generation. Many thanks. Why the seed suppliers couldn't say this, I don't know. Perhaps only very strange people have that need to know?

I think seed suppliers are so keen to get the new varieties onto the market that they tend to skip some of the generations required to ensure stability. I've had a few varieties that were nothing like their descriptions. In the case of Mango Lassi, I can only state from my own experience that the plant I grew ( and from which you now possess seeds) was very close in appearance to the one shown in the Instagram post, although I think the trusses on mine were a little more compact and even.

Well, thanks again. And, if your donated seeds produce plants like your photo shows, then I'll be delighted. Looks like you allowed two stems to grow too which intend to try. Many thanks.

Nice looking plant. Did you find it had the mangoey flavour they suggest?

not heard of vital seeds, they sell some landrace stuff which is interesting. perhaps we have a thread just listing and reviewing seed sites in the uk.

F5 should be pretty stable already but if you grow 2 or 3 i think youd be garenteed to get the intended plant.

I did detect the mango but only once, after the Summer vanished and came back again.

The Instagram post was from 2021, so we can add a couple more Fs to that.

Must order my seeds for this year so that I can plant in late January/March. I will search past posts to find favourites. Really not a big deal but I've learnt so much from you lot!! Thanks!!

I wouldnt start them too early! I grew cuces indoors until they were about a foot and a half with 6 sets of true leaves and they suffered intensely when I put them outside, several dying :cry3:

merry christmas gardenerscorner, and have a happy new year.
