Have you noticed that squirrels don't steal tomatoes? I wonder why. They nick everything else.

They have never touched our potatoes either - wish they would.

In my case it's because they can't get the greenhouse doors open.

We have loads of squirrels here and have never had problems with them taking things. Do wonder if its because there are so many trees in our area and they get their food from the wild.

They can't get into my gr'house either.
I have one plant outside, but there's only been one ripe tomato so far, so unless they like them hard and green....
We have plenty of food available around here for them too @Meadowlands, but that doesn't stop them wrecking feeders. It's why I don't use peanuts now. I'm damned if I'm spending money [a lot of it] on bird food, just for vermin to take. They cause enough problems as it is.

There's a columnist in the Guardian who regularly writes about the squirrels attacking his tomatoes, e.g. Tim Dowling: The squirrel is back. With a vengeance

I've had no trouble though. They've raided the hazel trees, but they planted those anyway so are entitled.
I wondered if the foxes might have a go at tomatoes as they like fruit, but I've seen no evidence of losing any. One of the fox poops in the garden recently was full of plum stones so they must be scavenging a lot of fallen ones.

Squirrels take them here, I have a mesh across the door although they find ways past it. During the day our cat deters them. One year we had magpies taking ripe tomatoes, they pecked a few and only took the sweetest.

Looks like I'm just lucky then. Perhaps it's what their parents teach them to eat.

Yes - I've had magpies taking them @JWK , or trying to , in the past. Mainly when the doors have been open to allow air flow when it's been hot. I put a mesh screen up, which stopped them.
A lot of magpies this year, but it hasn't been hot enough to need the doors opened, only the top.

I spoke too soon - I went out and found this on the lawn:

              2024-08-30_09-29-58.jpg

I wonder who the culprit is? I suspect bird as they have eaten most of the juicy inside and left the skin. I do get a lot of magpies.

I'm sure not as we have an ancient wood behind us with lots of nice beech and oak fruit which they eat often, but still try it on!

I thought it was squirrels eating my figs but now found a blackbirds nest in the top of the tree.
The young were all sitting in the branches a couple of days ago having a free feed.

The blackbirds are eating our Raspberries
I am picking 3 times a day to try and beat them :)

My blackbirds aren't back from their summer hols yet, but I'm hoping that when they do get back the rowan berries will keep them fed and stop them from noticing the raspberries!
