Tomatoes not riping..

    They're solid flesh with a tiny amount of pips and when they're removed are only good any for cooking with and go into pasta.

    At least we'll be using all our big toms for passata, and I suspect there may be some who wont be eating up all their big pumpkins.

    The odd thing is that when I asked Mrs Scrungee where the green big toms (that had been removed to let others grow bigger) had got to,then pulled them from the depths of our impromptu veggie rack, and once in the open they went from green to orange in a few hours.

    That doesn't seem to fit in with recommendations to put them in a drawer to ripen.

    Apparently this is nothing more than a gardening myth. Tests done by some lab or other ( can't recall the name ) proved that tomatoes require warmth to ripen, but not sunlight... in fact direct sunlight can cause scorching ( sunscald ), so even a windowsill is a bit risky.

    About 75% of the toms that I showed in another posting [ http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/...ssion/33361-tom-seedlings-looking-sickly.html ] ripened nicely sitting on the dining room table ~ skins were a bit thick, but the flavour was fantastic.
