I grew just 9 container- designed tumbling cherry tomato plants as underplanting in my large permanent containers last summer. The crops was awesome and the plants were pretty. And the kid enjoyed seeing them grow and harvesting the ripe ones every day. Started them indoors around April.

    Hi sheelaghm,
no, these were just big pots I have to grow the "principal plants". I just plopped the young tomato plants in around the main plant. Being a tumbling type they looked quite pretty hanging outwards. My pots take about 50l of compost and hosted last summer ie Morning glories, tiny Lonicera Nitida shrub etc.

It was our first attempt at growing tomatoes last year. We too have a sun trap back garden, beating down on back of house. With this in mind we went to our local nursery and bought two hanging baskets. We bought tomato compost, and four little 'tumbling tom' plants, about three inches high and ready to plant out. We got home, potted them up and hung them up.

We had an abundance of tomatoes, more than we could. eat! We enjoyed them so much. I was even roasting them and then making them into pasta sauce. Great fun!

Tomatoes are wonderful to grow, you can even grown some varieties in hanging baskets. I shall be growing Gardeners Delight, Sweet Million, Tigerella ( grew these last year very successfully ) and Alicante this year :thumb:

That's a great idea LL. I bought a kid's variety pack some years ago - the different colours supposed to appeal to kids, well it taught me to experiment with colours and tastes (up to then I just grew boring old Moneymaker), now I try and grow one or two new (to me) varieties each year - it's surprising how the taste varies. Heres my photo of last year's crop: http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=359130&postcount=36
