Strangely enough, we had some of the coldest temps in our little pocket last year (-18°c), but this year we are getting off lightly. My thermometer is admittedly in the sheltered part of the garden, which is where my "special" plants that I can't get in the garage are, but last night only dipped to -4°c.

we don't have frost as it's overcast and dew point says -14,3 degrees (as far as I understand, the temp has to be lower than dewpoint for frost to occur)

Still -12C. I've just been to the village (got the paper and some lovely hot rolls ) and seen an interesting sight - but didn't have my camera with me.

The large field between us and the village is a vast expanse of frozen snow and, as the sun is now shining brightly, I could see a thin layer of ice on top of the snow. presumably from where the snow started to melt yesterday and then froze solid.

As I was watching, the comparative warmth of the sun hitting the frozen layer of ice and rebounding from the reflectivness of the snow was causing the ice to suddenly sublimate and a cloud of mist rose from the ice with a rippling rainbow effect coming off it. This only lasted for about a minute or two. I don't think my camera would have been able to catch the effect.

Darn Sarff seems to be getting it worse than us Northerners at the moment. Currently -0.2C at Lancs cricket club. It feels colder today for some reason - my hands were freezing when I took the mutts out [IMG]

*dim* you get frost from 0C, the temperature that water, and some plant sap freezes.
The fact that the air is very dry means you dont see the frost, ie frozen dew.
      But its still a frost.:)

      -8C here last night.

It's been above 3 degrees here for the last few nights, the ground has actually thawed out since the freeze up last week, so much so that I could dig out the clamped beetroot yesterday and make Borscht for dinner last night!

        Steve...:)

It was -15C last night here in Rushden Northants ,coldest it's been in the 28 yrs I've lived here . Greenhouse was struggling to keep temprature up but the bubblewrap seems to have worked well. It's 10.40pm and now already -8C ..

In balmy Fife here, and bear in mind last year we were pretty much snowed in for 4 weeks. Still not seen a flake of snow, and it was around 7 degrees out of the wind here today. Had a delightful sunny (though brisk) day on the beach flying kites. Overheated when I went out for a run with a hat on.

Don't think I've ever seen the UK weather map look so inverted.

We're not allowed to be happy up here in Scotland, though, so I'm dreading what March will bring...

                It's a chilly 2 degrees here....brrrrr!

Agree with Boogaloo, it's odd for the north to be warmer than the south of the country.

                Steve...:)
