    they'l be no good for bees if you cut the pollen bits off

    Normal advice would be 3x the height of the bulb I think (which would be say 6") but planting deep keeps them cooler, which I think helps, so I would suggest 8" deep. I have read of some issues with keeping them alive over winter, so you might want to include some grit / horticultural sand under them (if you have heavy soil).

    They are a bit late for this year (if in the ground they would be up and above-ground by now), so don't expect too much from them this year - they take 2 or 3 years to get to the point where they are putting on some impressive top-growth :)

    thanks,mine have sprouted would that make a diff to the depth planted? got some sharp sand will that do? :SUNsmile: i bought them just to fill a planter with a trellis on it i couldnt think what else to put in it til i seen this thread :yay:so im in no rush with them x
