    Heinz 'Big Soup' is £2.70/Kg.

Our Sainsburys 10p pumpkin weighs 5.67Kg, so after allowing 20% wastage for rind, stem and seeds, that's about 4.82Kg of pumpkin flesh which is semi dry roasted in a slow cooker and might have about 15% water added (I'm ignoring the sautéed home grown onions & garlic, etc.) so about 5.5Kg for 10p which is less than 2p/Kg, taking account of seasonings, electricity, etc., maybe about 2.7 pence/Kg?

I think it's us what's having the laugh! It's one hundredth of the price to make it yourself.

P.S. Are you adding Turmeric to enhance the colour?

P.P.S. Just looking at the prices of New Covent Garden soup and that's £3.67/Kg

Wow! The half gallon of lentil soup I made was an extravagance compared to that! :hate-shocked:

Home grown onions and garlic, 1kg red lentils (28p), stock cube (12p), 2 Tbs freshly roasted and ground cummin (7p), sprinkle of turmeric, 2 tsp homemade tom puree, home grown bay leaves, two tsp homemade curry powder (2p) and each dish served with a slice of lemon floating on the top and a sprinkling of coriander leaves. Served 12 guests and lots left over for us.

Adding cost of gas etc. works out about 3p per serving.

Now if I added packaging, farmer's profit, manufacturer's profit, distributor's profit, retailer's profit, transport costs, storage costs and cost of disposal of packaging it would be about 60p a serving!

For lunch today had home made chunky vegetable stew (mainly chunks of pumpkin + whatever else was to hand) served with half a (reduced to 9p) pack of Morrisons steamed Polish dumplings, cost about 10p each. Same again tomorrow.

Not really the thread for this - but Sainsbury's were selling shoulder of lamb at £5 kg when I was in there on Wednesday.

EDIT: They're only free, not better than free as they don't compare for 'Price Promise' but still a great way of effectively buying Tesco Clubcard Points

Free pumpkins! (for Topcashback members) plus a potential profit http://www.topcashback.co.uk/SnapAndSave/upload/2319 to get up to £3 off when you buy a pumpkin.

'Giant' pumpkins are £3 at Tesco http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesco-price-comparison/Vegetables/Tesco_Giant_Pumpkin.html Going to get 1st one as part of a 'Price Promise' shop at Tesco this morning and hopefully it will compare against the 99p ones at Morrisons, so £3 from Topcashback and maybe another £2.01 back from Tesco, so potentially £5.01 off a £3 pumpkin. The £3 Topcashback will then be exchanged for £3.15 in Clubcard Vouchers and then used to double or treble up (or even 4x for meals at Prezzo). And we'll get 1 pumpkin for each of our Topcashback accounts.

            Happy Halloween!
