Well we have had a few tonight.Last year there was a lot of trouble with older teenagers on the estate.
My wife doesn't mind the little kiddies and it doesn't bother me. However if I open the door and it is some kid that I teach ie. secondary age I usually say "Aren't you a bit old for this sort of thing?" They then usually steer clear in case i bring it up the following day in front of their mates.
My wife doesn't think its right the older ones come. So she had a plan. The little ones came, fair enough, couple of sweets. When the older ones came she would put on older son's fancy dress party mask - a scarey scream mask. 7.30, ring at the door, long time since any little ones and there are two big figures through the frosted glass. So she dons the scarey mask and throws open the door. There are two teen age girls dressed normally with a two foot high pumpkin, eyes agog and on the verge of filling his little pants.

I think he got an extra big helping of sweets from what i heard but as i said later he is probably mentally scarred for life now...and her being a health visitor an all.... :D

We live in a fairly small village and know most of the kids and the parents that escort them. Sweets for the kiddies and a glass of wine for the escorts. The kiddies seem to look forward to it and we haven't got to suffer them going "hypo" from all the "E" numbers. Their parents have :D
Don't have much trouble from the older ones 'cause I've got a reputation for being an awkward old git. (Totaly undeserved :D )

Well, there we are, or rather, there we were 'cos it's done for another year; finished; extinct, etc.

I told you about the clothes pegs and believe me the look of total amazement on the little darlings faces ( ) as I handed them out, fair warmed the cockles of my heart. I think the fact that they were wooden clothes pegs, not those nasty cheap plastic ones was what impressed them most.

One small child even whispered 'I don't believe it you.....' I am afraid I missed the rest of his thanks but presume it was something like 'you kind old man' I'm sure I heard the word old in there somewhere.

Some kids clearly don't even bother to knock at the door though. We had our car egged, our windows painted, the cat was shaved....in all we had twelve individual acts of vandalism perpetrated against us. Strange to say I also gave out twelve clothes pegs so I guess that shows that about 50% of kids today are just vandals. Ah well I must go through the cupboard under the stairs and see what I can find for the grandkids' Christmas presents. ;) :D

My grumble is that we spend all year saying "don't take sweets from a stranger" then on one night parents wander round with their tots doing just that! We're lucky as we have no street lights and very few neighbours we don't get trick or treaters. As to it's origins: isn't it connected to the Scottish guising or have I got it muddled?

Hi, the origins go back to Pagan times, as had been said before. It's the "trick or treat" bit that has been taken from the U.S.A.. The 31st was when all the witches flew. You'll notice that in the Christian religion it's followed by "all souls" day. (The 1st of November) We used to celebrate it with "apple dunking" and things like that. What's the problem with copying the U.S.A. we followed them into Iraq, didn't we?

We had no problems with the trick or treaters.

Most of them were very young and with their Moms.
Dressed up and looked to be having loads of fun

A few older ones came but they were fine.
It all went quiet at about 8.30

It's just a bit of fun for the kids.
Like everything else there is always someone who wants to spoil it for everyone by acting like a thug.

I must say that trick or treaters- about 8 lots this year - were very well behaved.
Most had parents or older family with them and looked as if they were enjoying it all.
Some of the costumes were really good - must have cost quite a bit. One little lad
about 3 or 4-ish was completely in black with a luminous white skeleton painted on
the front - very effective :D

I'm thinking of getting some packs of dog or cat treats for them next year, perhaps I'm going soft. :D
Telling them I don't beleive in pagan festivals is a waste of time.
