UK and the EU

As I see it, politics is undergoing a right old upheaval that is on a par with a civil war, and this has been brought about by the ignorance or just plain stubbornness of the political elite, and it goes back a hell of a long way, and almost certainly before I was even born.

In short, for far too long the political elite the world over have made sure that they make decisions that ensure that those with wealth either retain that wealth or even gain further, whilst those in the lower/working classes have continued to graft away just to carve out a living, and have taken the brunt of "austerity" when those wealthy types above them got it wrong.

In the years leading up to this referendum, the warning flags were all there to see - yet not one of the political elite chose to see them. We ended up with a coalition government because no one party could garner enough votes to see them win - this was put down to voter apathy etc, yet the blunt truth is that voters were faced with a decision where they were being asked to choose which turd they wanted to be floating in the swimming pool! ALL of the offerings were shite, pure and simple.

UKIP made rapid and shock gains in local elections - yet another warning flag that things weren't pleasing the electorate. Did anyone stop and think why? No - they carried on regardless.

The SNP were voted into power in Scotland. Alex Salmond is, was and always will be nothing but a bam-pot (good Scots expression, and if you don't know it, look it up!) who was little more than a power hungry little extremist, and that wee nyaff of a side-kick Sturgeon is no better. Did they get voted in because they were the right choice for Scotland? Did they hell as like! Labour had made a complete hash of things, so they were out of the equation, the Lib Dems had sold out and gone into partnership with the Tories, and most Scots would rather stick needles in their own eyeballs than vote Tory. The ONLY choice left was SNP. So yeah, they are the fat, spotty, smelly kid who got picked last for the football team because there was nobody left.

And lastly, the General Election - the Tories got in by a majority, but it was a slim one, and again look at the choices voters had in front of them. Labour were fronted by Ed Milliband - seriously, my fingernails have more gumption than that man will ever have. Lib Dems, well they had crashed and burned after going into coalition with the Tories (I think it is fair to say that most Lib Dem voters were probably disgruntled ex-Labour voters), UKIP - well, they were fine for a protest vote, but for government? Really? So again, the voters had a choice akin to being faced with a firing squad and being asked to pick a gun. Truthfully, I think the reason the Tories got in was simply because Cameron promised to have a referendum on the EU.

Whilst all of this was going on, we continued to reap what Thatcher had sowed back in the 80's - housing was (still is!) drying up, and yet there were more and more people coming into the country seeking a better life. After the bankers completely screwed the world's economies up and brought about the financial crash, austerity was enforced to balance the books. And who is it that loses their job or takes a pay cut in times of austerity?? The working classes of course. The rich continue to live well, and get richer; those that earn property can put any rental price they like over the door, and some mug will pay it because they have no choice.

And then the NHS and schools started to creak at the seams - increasing numbers of people using the services, decreasing budgets and overstretched staff. Again, those with wealth didn't give two hoots as their BUPA services were just lovely, thank you very much.

And then the referendum arrived. People who were already beyond pee'd off with the political establishment were then forced to endure weeks of political mouths ripping each other to bits. Hard facts were scarce at best, and our so called leaders chose to either scare people into voting the way that the elite wanted them to vote, or they chose to make personal attacks on other politicians. I have seen better behaved kids on school buses!

The working classes simply have had enough of not being listened to, and paying heavily (some with their jobs) due to the financial crash caused by the very same people who were still swanning around in Aston Martins and getting six-figure bonuses. They were sick and tired of seeing their children growing up, and then not being able to get a house of their own unless they paid through the nose in rent and essentially gave up all hope of ever owning their own home. They were sick and tired of driving on roads that resembled the surface of the moon, whilst paying OVER 80% applied tax on their fuel for the pleasure. They were sick and tired of the EU bureaucrats dictating that their bananas had to be straight, or that their kettle had to be below a certain wattage to save the environment whilst watching China burn anything that was combustible.

The working classes saw an opportunity to send a message to the world's political elite - WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!

Sadly, the message does not appear to have been interpreted fully yet, but I have a feeling that it will be. If I were a betting man, I would put money on the EU imploding at some point not all that long after we leave - - already there are other countries who have citizens and politicians pushing for a referendum similar to ours. Reading some of the many articles on the web, it seems that we are not the only electorate that are cheesed off with the wealthy layabouts dictating to us what we do. I would also put money on Donald Trump as the next US President. I think that this would be a terrible thing for the US and the world, as the man is divisive at best - however, I think it is fairly inevitable as (like us) the voters are being asked to choose which turd they want floating in their swimming pool. Currently, Trump is the loudest fart of them all, hence he will be that turd. In many respects, he too is a protest vote.

And then, finally we have the background of ISIS and the terrorist attacks that have been taking place. Whether we like it or not, the very basis of our society - our freedom to go about our daily business, and to live where we are not guilty until proven otherwise - well, it has all but gone. We are all subject to increasing security (not that it is a bad thing in many instances), and have had to change our lives as a result; those changes range from things like cancelled concerts and events, to massively increased security at events that do go ahead, and even people being hunted/arrested/questioned with the suspicion of being a terrorist whilst they are innocently going about their business. One of the most basic aims of terrorism is to disrupt the daily lives of the wider populace - - so far, they are succeeding.

Personally, I think that we are merely at the tip of a very big iceberg at the moment, and our elected politicians need to wake up fast to the message that they are being sent. We need to get back to basics, and to have each country pay more attention to their own rather than a select few countries picking up the can.
