China's shift from coal to gas will also have contributed to high gas prices, they reckon as many as 10 million households switched from coal to gas in one year, that's the equivalent of one third of UK households switching to an alternative energy source.

With sanctions being imposed on Russia, we tend to forget other commodities Russia is rich in. Ukraine might be the breadbasket country, but Russia is the biggest exporter of wheat. Then when you look at the exports of other cereal's, fertiliser, aluminum to name a few, then when he retaliates and bans these exports to unfriendly countries, costs spiral.

 

I read another version of events that I think is more plausible.

That is that Russia is using China as a middle man to sell on its gas.

 

So, power of siberia was initially built to pipe gas from Russia to China, so they would be the middle man in the future?
Due to the high gas prices, China announced it was going to reduce all coal tariff imports to zero to ensure energy security, which would explain that imports of coal in July and August have been at the highest this year.

Even better, I am cautiously optimistic about our new PM. It seems she's already got the ball rolling in discussions with energy producers about severing the link between gas and electricity prices, and seems to have the renewable suppliers potentially on board with the idea of locking in low prices for electricity generated from renewable sources.

It's a shame she's allowing fracking, and further extraction from the north sea. That's not very eco, but the reality is despite decades of warnings we just haven't got ourselves ready for a green transition, so I guess needs must. But by negotiating the costs down on renewables, that should encourage more demand over time for electricity generated from renewables, which should drive up investment.

I think that's even better. With the swift kick up the posterior that we've had to hopefully accelerate renewables, it may well be that by the time we get any oil out of there we won't need as much of it.

 

A licence issued today means oil and gas 10 years from now. A lot of good that will do when the lights go off in January.

 

I think if you compare the population of Norway with the population of Britain it would have worked out a lot less.

But that is what has been going on for years, short term thinking.
None of this stuff happens instantly it needs to be looking into the future.
If someone had started something 10 or 20 yrs ago we might be reaping the benefits now.

Because one government starts something and the next one cancels it, we have stood still for the last 40 yrs.

 

What we need is ONSHORE wind farms in England and Wales like we have in Scotland. And storage. Molten salt or huge weights down old mine shafts. Something to soak up the excess energy for when the wind drops or the sun doesn't shine.

 

How much gas would that create?
