    Hi again Shelby. :)

I've lived in Canada also ... Montreal and Toronto.

My Dad lived in SS Marie (without me whilst I was in school in England) so you are in a beuatiful place.

I cannot believe you bought that plant today ... you said at an A&P but I would say a garage sale .... sorry, I'm being me ....

Anyway, saw you put another ID thingy up .... I'll have a look as will many of our wonderful members ,...

Thanks for joining us and I hope we will cross paths again ....

Not sure if this will help but here is a close up of one of the leaves.

Also, If it is Palm Scale that it has I will not be happy with A&P but unfortunately I'm pretty sure they will not give a refund.

Shelby, I edited your images as they were way too big for this board. Would you be kind enough to make sure that in future they do not exceed the 600x800 size? Thank you.

Hi Shelby - yes it is known as a Parlour Palm - I have two of these plants - it may need to be re-potted as it's a hefty looking specimen.

I have just re-potted mine - I keep the compost fairly moist and have the plants in a fairly light position as I do find that the fronds tend to 'dry out' and brown easily if they are placed in direct sunlight.

Does the plant look as though it has slight mould on the leaves? If the plant has been in an atmosphere that is too humid, then that may be the problem. Hope that helps - still a novice but as I have a couple of these plants and they are thriving I am obviously doing something right :)

Gotta say it looks more like some kind of spray residue to me, rather than a pest.

It is possible Pete, the difference compared to the scale on my palms is that it clings to the stems as well, on Shelby's plant (on seeing it close up) there is marking on the fronds only.
I really wasn't sure whether to have mentioned scale at all as I didn't think anyone would sell a plant with such an infestation. I hope it isn't but that's what it appeared to me straight off.
Some fronds looked burnt as well.

    Well,

I have looked online and supposedly Palm Scale is supposed to have bumpy dots on the bottom of the leaves, I have wetted a cloth and wiped a part of the leave and the marks came right off. I should also note that I checked on the inner pot and found out that there was over 3" of water sitting in the bottom, I have dumped the water and will let the tree/palm dry a bit before watering. If anyone else has advice please feel free to advise.

Actually, time will tell - I'd give it more of a wipe and treat it kindly as you have been doing. It'll thrive in time, I am sure. Looks too healthy not to.

I have been thinking of giving it a cleaning but I'm unsure how to, I read somewhere that you can put it in the shower and clean it, But I'm to scared that I might kill it doing that. My mother says that it needs to adjust before I start misting it and such, I'm not too sure though. If anyone knows please let me know.

Also, I have read somewhere that these palms flower?

Is this true? And if it what do they look like?

Shelby, I am hoping it isn't palm scale and that it will wipe off. These palms do not normally flower outside the subtropics and then usually when about 5/6 metres high. The smaller Dwarf Palour Palm Chamaedorea Elegans does flower indoors and when old enough, every year.
Misting is ok but preferably with rain water unless your tap water is soft as hard water will leave it marked (again). If the marks (whatever they are ) if under the leaves, would not be removed in a shower, I would advise against this method.

Ok, I have repoted it into a much much larger pot, While repoting, I found some type of fungus, White Ball looking with water inside of them, I cleaned the dirt out and got rid of all those white balls, The plant seems to be doing wonderful but I have no idea where I should put it :(

I also had a look online and I think that it might not be a Parlour Palm but instead a Areca Palm. Not sure on this though.

If anyone can give me tips on where it should be placed in a one window west facing bedroom it would be appreciated.
