I take your point about abusing the system. I wouldn't exploit glitches in the system of a small family firm, but VM and T&M are big boys. The plug plants I got from VM look little more than a fortnight old. Buying them at full price would have been a rip-off and I'd have been complaining.

People ordering online are effectively subsidising those ordering at the same price through a printed catalogue, due to the extra staff time required to enter those details into their database. Those ordering online do this themselves. Having been at the company end trying to decipher handwriting and enter it into a database, I can tell you how time-consuming this can be.

"people ordering online are effectively subsidising those........ "

That's a load of rubbish, online you get all sorts of buy one get one offers, free p+p, price reductions, sales etc. With a catalogue you get just that, a catalogue and nothing else until the next catalogue is published.
It's us who use catalogues who subsidise all the computer users.

It can work both ways, computer users shopping at Wilkos online at the moment for gardening stuff are paying full price, whilst those who check in store(s) are getting it at up to 75% off.

One could suggest that those who buy full price are subsiding those who wait until sales and special offers.

Completely agree. As far as T&M are concerned I've been sent dead plants, half dead plants, seeds that didn't germinate, a towerpot sent months late which was very inconvenient etc etc. If the seeds I got from VM don't germinate, at least they were free :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Glad to see GC members made the most of VM's generous promotion.

I'll keep on trying to find another such offer, M&S a few years ago reduced their Xmas items to 50% off online, then when they reduced them by a further 50% they made them free (instead of 75% off), thought that wouldn't happen again, but blow me, the following year they did it again. As we didn't want all that overpriced tacky stuff, we took it back and got credit notes then got loads of stuff we actually wanted completely free of charge, these things do happen if you watch out for them and get in quick.

Good posts, regarding Van Meuwen, though they are part of Thompson Morgan :thud: .

I too have received dead/damaged plants, I always complain, and they are only
                too happy to replace them.

Got my Raspberry and Redcurrant bare root plants today. I'm pretty pleased with the paper bags they came in, they will be good for storing potatoes!
