    Well said Dee:gnthb:

Kristen,I hope you don't mind me saying this but we can't all be fortunate to have well paid jobs in Computers and so are able to give Donations to this site to keep it up and running. You seem to forget there is a ressession and people haven't got a lot of money to flash around like you seem to have.

When the adverts first appeared on here and they were mentioned in a post the admin people came on and told us all that we were not to disscuss in any way shape or form the adverts or else Disciplinary action would be taken against us,which I can assure you didn't go down very well:(Now that the site has been upgraded we now find that to get rid of the unmentionables we have to donate money to the site to get rid of them, but really why should we as we didn't ask for them to be put there in the first place.:p

I am just getting a tad fed up with people trying to dictate what I as a long standing member has or not has to do on this site.If I was in the financial position to spend money on Donations then I would, but at this moment in time any spare money that I might have,I would rather put it towards the large heating bill that we are likely to get in the spring if we have the same sort of winter as this winter just gone,or even to put the money towards our mortgage so that our home is the last thing that can be taken off of us if the worst came to the worst.I am not asking for sympathy, that would be the last thing i would do,but I do know there are members on here that struggle from day today to pay just their basic bills, but like us don't need to keep shouting about it.We give money to deserving charities as and when we can afford it.

By all means if it makes you all happy you can have the largest badge on your profiles to show that you have donated to keep this forum running, and when I am a buisness person with some loose change in my pocket I will gladly help out,but only if I want to:D

No wonder this site is losing all of it's best members and posters.I think they must have all gone off to Gardening sites where you don't have to pay to be a member and the only site that I have see where money is needed to run the site, they have adverts and the clicking on the adverts pays a sum of money to the site to keep it ticking over,or you can buy allotment and preserving books which come reasonably priced and with free seeds to boot.I am not interested in playing arcade games either as I don't have the time to sit here for too long playing them and besides my back problems wouldn't allow it.:p

And never fear, with your attitude to people you would be the last person I would approach for advice:flag::D

Hope you have a good day:)

:dh: People people...!!!! Nothing has changed... There is NO membership being asked for...........!!!!
. Donating is entirely voluntary up to the member personally & there are to be no badges or bells or stickers for donating if you do...!!!! We decided that was a bad idea for the very reasons Kandy mentioned above...

We want you all to carry on enjoying GC just as you did before & if you would like to say "Thank You" to Nathan for providing us with this great site then please do by a donation.... :)

By way of GC's Thanks back to you we will take the adverts away from you... Otherwise they help Nathan to pay, to keep GC afloat........................................:)

Flipping heck, I go away for a few weeks and it's all changed again! I know I'm not a useful contribitor on here but as you all know, I love it and try to help when I can.

However, I have to say - I liked the old, old site best. I understand that it was probably becoming too big for one person to run but we did offer to contribute. I agree with what Steve R has said. Please don't go down the route of membership fees etc. I do realise that I am a bit of a luddite though, :) so bow to the people in the know!

Well, I'm off now to explore everything else - fingers crossed I don't find it too confusing.

    cheers

I'm happy to donate and also happy for others not to. It shouldn't take too many of us donating to keep the site running.

I tend to give advice whenever I feel like it or when I have some spare time - not very often :)

The ads don't bother me whether they are there or not. I'm quite good at ignoring things :hehe:

I'm still waiting to hear whether there is another way to donate apart from PayPal, which I dislike.

Keep up the good work Nathan and team. :gnthb:

Ok, back button is working again. It seems to be rather erratic and has been going on for a few days, which is why I didn't mention before, as I hoped it would clear up. It's not my 'puter as it was doing it at work yesterday.

It's not the end of the world as one can scroll to the top and go "back" by clicking on the section you are in, but thought you might like to know in case it's a sign of more problems in the "back office".

Refreshing works, thanks, but I don't need to do this on any other website so by a process of elimination, it seems to be a problem here!

well, would seem to be a mismatch between this forum and your computer as we've not had any other complaints regarding this and none of the staff are experiencing it. Can't think what to suggest. I'm very sorry. I wish I could think of something to fix it for you.

Hmm, having reviewed some of the comments on this thread, I'm not sure I'm quite in tune with 'knocking' Kristen. I've always found him helpful and friendly, AND should be regarded as a valuable member. I don't like this :(

I had thought the same myself to be honest and have noticed he doesnt appear to have been on here since :(

Even when people dont share the same opinion I dont think there is any reason at all to personally attack someone. A strong, heated debate is fine (I quite like them myself) but sometimes, some comments are a little below the belt .....

SussexG - I think I have solved my problem of backpage not working. I was using the classic style forum skin. When I changed to the default style, the backpage worked. And when I went back to the classic it didn't again. So I am on the default skin. You may have to exit GC completely for the effects to take place.

The route is click on your name at the top of the page, then 'customise profile' in the top box below your name, 'edit options' in the 'settings and options' box in 'your control panel'. Forum skin is at the very bottom in a drop down box. Then select 'save changes' at the very bottom.

I would be against any compulsary membership fee. I think it puts off newcomers who might only have a single question, but could get hooked and become useful members. We need as wide a membership as possible.

However I do appreciate the need for funds to run the site, and personally I am quite happy to put up with adverts (as long as they are not extreemly intrusive - as some I have seen on other internet sites). We are all happy with adverts being used to fund TV channels.
