Might still be something on your system that is preventing it downloading cleanly.

By the by, don't have your infected computer connected to your router at the same time as any "clean" machines. Disconnect / turn off the clean machines when you have the infected machine running. (You can use "do not connect to network" ... but you might forget, or something might work around that ...)

    Just belt&braces to prevent cross-infection

Probably too late, Kristen. I have to hand the RM back to school in 2 weeks time (unless they forget!) so it will be their problem then.

Might have been too late at the get-go too ... once one is infected, and before you perhaps become aware of it, if the virus is able to spread via the network it will be getting on with doing just that ...

I've already asked the school technician for help - he came up with the Norton suggestion. I'll flag the possibility of cross contamination up to him. He wasn't very interested in helping with the virus prob.

I've now run the Rkill in safe mode. It says there is a problem and lists them, but doesn't offer to do anything else, like, would it be too much trouble to remove them?? There are no extra buttons to click, I was hoping a big one marked "Instant destruction".

I haven't used Roguekiller or Hitman. The old laptop won't allow a download of Roguekiller, it says it's infected with a virus! Also, the page crashes if i try and it will not give the option to save onto a memeory stick - to use on the new laptop. For Hitman, I'm not sure if i should download the 32 or 64 bit version. I'll get onto it again tomorrow.

I have now gone through the steps mentioned by Palustris, Rkill, Malware bytes, Rogue Killer and Hitman. None of them came up with a problem, but the Firewall still won't turn back on.
I haven't tried a system restore. The computer seemed more or less back to normal (although it did something VERY strange this morning). Any further suggestions re the Firewall?

The BF is suggesting reinstalling the operating system but I'd prefer to avoid that as there is software on there I don't want to lose.

This is a link to the main site I use when a client asks me to remove a virus like this, http://www.spywareremove.com/removesystemcareantivirus.html
Don't click on any of the download buttons, it's the instructions you need to follow and if you are using IE to browse, I suggest you switch to firefox or Chrome to remove the virus.

Thanks for that, I'll look it over tomorrow, there's a lot to digest.
