In the immortal words of Eddy Izzard - 'Oh look, a badger with a gun!'

I am pleased to see more politicians in the U.S. taking a stand this time (not convinced they are entirely honest about their reasons for it but willing to give the benefit of doubt) and Obama has nothing to lose by making his stand on the topic.
Even members of the NRA are coming round - they, shock, don't see why people need assault rifles. Well blimey, an epiphany...

This looks like a small step in the right direction.

        http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20782805

(Quite why the BBC has filed it under entertainment is beyond me, I think its an error rather than deliberate though).

        I like this bit.

A bit of common sense at last.

The typical opposite of common sense, and a sign of extremely bad taste among some people.

I think Obama is in a good position to really make a difference. For Obama, there is no such thing as political suicide, because he is in his second term, and if I understand correctly, he is not allowed a third term regardless of what happens, so he may as well try to do what is right.

You're right, he can't run for a third term, but whatever he does has to be a step in the right direction.

Such a shame this all had to be triggered (no pun intended!) by another massacre. They knew about the issues and lapsed legislation but did nothing. Bloody politicians.

There was a program on CNN the other day with Pierce Morgan [whom I'm not a fan of ] and he was interviewing the families of those killed from the Cinema shooting in Denver, Colorado in July of this year. Before that, however, he interviewed a high up Member of the American National Rifle Association who had stated when interviewed after the shooting at the School of 20 children and 7 adults that shooting the weapon mainly involved [a Bushmaster Assault Rifle] "was fun and a blast". Now you would think that nobody would give such a moronic and uncaring answer after being asked about the weapon by the Media, but he did. He also blamed the Media for asking him the question and wouldn't/couldn't recognise the fact that he was responsible for what came out of his mouth and the answer he gave. Pierce Morgan, to give him credit, got a bit irate with the guy and asked him how he could give such a facetious and uncaring answer after what had happened. The guy just shrugged his shoulders and said "you shouldn't ask me the question then".

The Republicans, in general, are the main defenders of the Second Amendment and the various National Weapons organisations. While you've got guys like the one Pierce Morgan interviewed still spouting what he did in the face of the tragedy of the School shooting, and others, American Gun Laws will not change dramatically despite the best efforts of President Obama and his supporters.
In the the infamous words of the late Charlton Heston "I'll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands", I think, sadly, that's what families of victims of such maniac shooting incidents will be doing for a long time to come as I can't see the American Public influencing the Politicians and the interested, agenda motivated organisations to change the Gun Laws in any positive permanent way. The last ban of Assault Rifles was for 10 years only and has now expired so possibly all that is going to happen is another 10 year ban on Assault Weapons. The Americans have a habit of "kicking the can further up the road" and I don't see that changing.:coffee:

I'm not understanding the obsession regarding assault rifles, I do understand that maybe no one can justify owning one, but if you get shot a killed it dont matter much as to what was used.
I' m pretty sure if I had lived in a country where gun ownership was allowed I'd probably want one.
I'm thinking we have both ends of the wedge here, in the UK if you defend yourself you get locked up after being dragged thorough the courts for months.
Despite so called recent changes to the law.

In the US they allow you to defend yourself, but its probably far too lax.
As to having no real checks on gun owners, no I do not agree that is right.

But a middle road, somewhere between the two should be the way to go.

There will always be nutters, I'm sure most of the US gun owning population are responsible people, it only takes a few in what is a very large population.

And lets not forget, if a gun man starts trouble here, even the police are inept, until they manage to get round to whistling up the armed bunch.
And even they spend months in court trying to justify their actions should the have to shoot someone.
