Thanks, that one didn't appear when I did a search, but I think I typed in 'floodlight' and this is called a 'work light'. To me they're the same thing, but obviously not to them.

For those who have a car, you can also consider this fellow:

      Amazon.co.uk

Charges via USB but is also capable of later charging other devices via USB (so phones, torches, radios etc), has an LED torch built in and it's primary function is jump starting a car when the battery is flat. Quite a versatile tool.

Does it do the jump starting on its own ? i.e. do you need another vehicle to attach it to ...

Yes, my fault, I just see it as a floodlight, they are pretty bright.

I'd only ever use that once:biggrin:
If a car needs jump starting it need a new battery IMO.
But must admit the other uses are worthwhile

No other vehicle needed - and should be good for at least two or three charges, however can be charged via the USB socket connected to a cigarette lighter/12v/USB socket in the car. Really versatile wee thing that literally sits in the palm of your hand.

I have a couple of solar security cameras that struggle to charge in winter, and are not near enough to a power socket, so rather than dismount them, I simply pop a 5m USB cable into them and run it to this unit to charge them up

Generally, you are right - however, marry it with a Ctek MX5.0 charger and you could be onto a winner as that charger can actually recover batteries (not all types, to be fair) that would normally be deemed as scrap.

There's a brighter one and I was wondering if it was worth the extra money to get that, but I don't know what 1000 lm and 2000 lm are like, Is the one you've got bright enough to cope in a power cut @pete ? They don't usually last very long.

You have me wondering now, it just says 23w LED , it has two settings but I cant see much difference between them.

I lights up a normal sized room good enough to see what you are doing.

Going purely on dimensions it appears I might have the more expensive one the £39.98 one.

                  From Google-

Lumens measure brightness: more lumens means brighter, while fewer lumens means dimmer. For example, a traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces about 800 lumens of light.

So the 1000 lm would be like a 100 wat bulb. That would be enough I think, thank you.

I have an old fashioned battery operated torch in the cupboard under the stairs where the fusebox is. I think that when the lights go out, the first place to check is the fusebox so the torch is there, hanging from a hook.

The staircase has (link) USB rechargeable motion sensor lights which are a godsend- they turn on when I wander downstairs in the night to powder my nose. Very safe. They stick on with a magnet and I plug them in to charge from my laptop when I work from home. One charge lasts about a month. On the downside, they don't tell me when the charge is low but just stop turning on one night.

USB charging is easy if you use a laptop, just plug the charger in when the laptop is on. The plug is just like the one for a mouse.

Many new houses have USB wall sockets, and many smartphones come with a plug that fits into a normal wall socket but can also be used for USB charging.

Charger that came with iPhone, normal mains plug with a USB lead that can be pulled out and plugged into a computer USB port if needed:

In a laptop, it just plugs in in the same slot where a mouse would go.
