I know a man what mends vacuum cleaners so I asked him if he could recommend one. 'Ooooooh get a Dyson .. ' he said without hesitation '... I love them, they're always in here for repair,' so 3 years ago I got a cheapie one from Tesco at less than a ¼ of the price of a Dyson. OK, so at that price I don't expect it to last for years and years, but if each one lasts 4 years, it's still going to take me 16 years to spend what I'd have spent on one Dyson.

I tried two of those cheap hoovers from Tesco's{Eletrolux Pet Care Hoover} it was the cheapest heap of rubbish I ever bought and wish I hadn't bothered although cleaning out the cone wasn't too bad the cylindrical filter with its material fins were a pain to clean and dry so after a few years I chucked it out when it started to over heat and went back to a Dyson {DC27 Animal}and aprt from it being heavy does everything I want it to.:D

One of my village friends had a Miele and every time she pulled the pipe it came out of the hole and wouldn't stay where it was supposed to.Another had a Sebo and she gave up with having to change the bags all the time:mad:

I think you will find the tips are full of Dysons because the rich youngsters these days are all trying to keep up with each other so want the latest model when it comes onto the market and wouldn't be seen dead expecting their cleaners from using a Dyson DC01:DSame with the irons, they change them every year or so for the latest £300 steam generator iron :heehee:

It's Dyson for us. Bought our first one, DCO1, in 1994 (I think) and the only trouble we ever had with it was the switch needed replacing - done by the local repairman for £15.

That lasted well into the naughties when the switch went again and some internal wiring from the switch was getting a bit dodgy. The repairman offered us £40 for the machine as he said he could make use of quite a few of the parts and the new DCO7 (doesn't need filters) was on special offer. That works very well and no problems. :dbgrtmb:

I've always liked Dysons products and have still got the Ballbarrow we bought in 1975. Oh my god! It must be older than me! :heehee:

A word of warning about Dyson.

We have a DC01 - had it for best part of 20 years. It often has issues and is stripped down regularly to clear blockages etc. I can do this so don't mind at all.

A friend of ours bought a later model, based on our recommendation and found that, for just a belt change it was neccesary to call out an Engineer. The belt area was not a user accessible area.

I no nothing about the latest models, but it might be worth checking out aftercare and user service options first before lashing out £200.

You think Electrolux is rubbish, Kandy! I'll raise you a Moulinex. We bought one of those - a long time ago. It had a plastic impeller and each time we vacuumed under the Bidgie cage the impeller shattered under the strain of lifting Millet droppings. The 3rd one we got (in a month) blew up in the shop when we asked the assistant to test it.
Got a refund and legged it.:hapfeet:

I suppose it depends on whether, like us, you have a reasonably cheap local repairman. Our one has a tiny shop front and workshop in back and he and his, now qualified, assistant are kept busy with repairing electric equipment. :dbgrtmb:

Gc a lot of the parts with a Dyson have a five year guarantee I think it is so if any of those parts go wrong they will replace them free of charge which i have never heard of with other hoover makers.:)

If I remember rightly my first Vacume cleaner was an a Hoover Power Drive which I had when i first got married in 1976 and the best part about it was that it had a headlight at the front of it which was fantastic for when i needed to get into dark places with it,Unfortuneatly the belts kept goin after a number of years and we found we couldn't get replacements even after we found a samll shop that got hold of them the shop closed in the end because no one wanted to have their machines repaired any more just chuck them and get a new one.I still wish I had that hoover as it was one of the best:D

Dysons have a filter that needs washing/replacing from time to time

not many people are aware of this so end up tipping/disposing of the machine when it does not function properly

but I still maintain that for just over £100, a Henry is your best bet .... never gives probs and compares well against the top of the range new Dyson Animal
