VEGETABLE GROWING 2020

Have the mice had them (a row of neat holes would be a clue ...)

I start all of mine off indoors, mice-free, and then they can go out once they get out of control ...

 

Thanks Kristen, not that, the compost hasn't been disturbed at all, first thing I looked for. I'll give it a couple more days then get the trowel out and investigate

 

Well, after 3 weeks the broad beans have popped up but only one pea so far. I have sown more peas in my heated propagator and some on a damp tissue where a few have already sprouted. A wood pigeon seems to have adopted my garden so was thinking about some netting but don't want it tangle the bird if it gets caught in it.
Looks like I'll have to be alert if it becomes interested in the shoots and shoo it away.

Picked first of my radishes yesterday.

 

Loads of veg growing but now running out of final pot size for planting on and only got half bag compost left.

 

Given the current situation, it was decided that a veg plot would be a good idea. So, one of the flower/shrub beds had to go, to be replaced by raised beds. It’s been a good few years since I last grew veg, and have always missed it. It would have been nice to have more space to work with, but I have what I have. They are closer together than I would have liked, but I can work with it. Each one is 10’x4’

Believe it or not, they’re fairly full already. Potatoes, broad beans, carrots, beetroot, spring onions, sprouts, cabbage, parsnips, French beans, runner beans and lettuce. I just wish I had more space!

Wow. I have nothing but carrots and radish in at the moment. And then the kids went through the bed with a rake, so no idea what will. One up where if at all.

 

I've cleaned up the broad bean patch just a little bit.


They're starting to crop.



The radish leaves and kale have all gone. IFE10M!

 

Not my plot but I am happy to see the spinach doing really well.

This is the parent plant from which cuttings were taken.





This thornless variety produces thorns if you don't propagate from tip cuttings.

Although these blackberries crop well, make superb jam and drinks, I have yet to work out how to make them naturally super sweet.

Normally, these leaf veg are quite difficult to grow in the community garden because of the rampant horde of slugs and snails.

This dry-ish spring weather seems to have made the difference.

 

Runner beans sown in mid March and left in the cold frame.
