Vegetable Growing 2024

I've lifted my garlic as the tops had withered, it looks a bit odd this year.
the bulbs have mostly split for some reason.

 

Our tops had withered too @pete so I asked OH to harvest them while I faffed with other stuff. Bulb sizes are variable, like @Hanglow's crop. They're currently drying on racks and then will be cleaned and stored.

The shallots should be ready soon but I'll wait now till after we've had Saturday's rain.

 

It took a very long time for my cucurbits including these pumpkins to get going this year:




But, the interplanted catch crop of radishes were easy enough to grow.



Not that I have trouble growing them. Here they were a few moments ago:

 

Left in the ground too long, but it is always difficult to tell with garlic. We have found it best to look at the upper growth and if it looks far on, then pull a couple to look at the size/bulb togetherness . Our bought garlic cloves are all up and a few split the same. Supermarket stuff stiil going as tops healthy and the couple pulled looked good.

Ah another southerner ... Really blackberries! Still just flowers here.

 

Well what to say. So many of you are having such good harvest already and we are only still sowing or trying to sown seeds outdoors. We are so far behind this year for personal reasons and trying to catch up. We will get some harvest but a lot less than "normal" what ever that is for us at the moment.

 

Sorry @On the Levels for any personal problems, but we are also so far behind and just saying we will by August (I'm sure) get veg... Hence it is funny to us in a way... Do hope things catch up.

 

Strange that they have split, I've never had it happen before.
I never dig them up until the tops have died.

 

First time growing elephant garlic. Impressed with the size. Grown in a raised bed so probably coped with the wet and cold better than if planted in the main beds.

 

Little bits from small beds. Happy to say that lettuces and beetroots are surviving despite being digged out a couple of times by foxes. More of these and radishes to come! I'm finding that radishes are growing very inconsistently, some are almost ready and some still have days and days to grow. I always thought they will grow in the same time frame, so I can pull them all together rather then bit by bit (I have only one row - no space).

 

We normally have been self-sufficient with our onions, usually Hi Keeper and Senshui, either grown from seed or sets. I planted back end of last year, and in early spring this year but our crop is terrible. Small (usually my Hi Keepers are exhibition-sized) forced their way to the surface to show barely any roots and in some cases white mould. I know we had significant amounts of rain over the winter and early spring but I've never had such poor results. When our garlic (in the same bed) appeared ready I harvested them to find many had never even developed into bulbs. Anyone else had disappointing results this year?

 

It's my understanding that garlic needs a period of cold weather in order to bulb up. Lots of us are having poor results with crops that normally do well not sure if there's one answer to it.
