Hi Peter, from the screen shot it looks like the instant spam from Windows Messenger, not to be confused with MSN Messenger, which I mentioned earlier, it only occurs on Windoze 2000 and XP (not sure if it has contiued with vista)
The only reason I'm running 2000 and not 98se is that a couple of applications I use won't run on 98.

    Cheers MIKE

Hi Patricia, is your PC still under warranty? If not get a quote first, unless you have a friend or colleague at work to help who REALLY knows what they are doing.
Beware of places like PC world, they don't get the best write ups in Which? magazine.
    Cheers MIKE

Sunshine - my apologies - I did a quick google of Adaware and found that page at the top - but it is a sham page.

Try this http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2128934/ad-aware-se-personal-edition-05 this does look as though it will work. I would download it into a special directory such as C:/My Utilities or some such. Then double click on it in that directory. That will make it execute. When it executes it will install itself - just accept the defaults. I like to keep the original files of all these sort of things in a utilities directory, which I copy at times to a blank CD-ROM. I have ended up with hundreds of such utilities, and when I reformat my hard disks - which I do quite often - they are all handy.

There are a number of such free programs. Other names are CWSShredder, Hijack This, StartupList, WinPatrol and many more. They all pick up different things. Finding and understanding viruses can become a hobby in its own right.

If you don't get any joy with this, I would suggest a restore. I don't have that facility in Windows 98, so I can't help. But I am sure someone else can. However you must make sure you have copies on CD of all your data - eg pictures, word and spreadsheet files, e-mail address book etc, before you think of doing that.

Sunshine, it is def a virus type thing which causes these pop ups, DONT click on them. Try downloading PeterS link and see if that works, if not, get in a local PC repair person to sort it for you, as Mike says I wouldn't go to PC World as they will charge you the earth, have a look for a local company in your area.

ALL OF YOU, should really have Norton or McAfee full internet protection, don't rely on the Windows XP firewall, expecially if you use MSN Messenger or simalar. You can buy it at PC World or online here:

    http://www.norton-online.com/uk/store/?gclid=CP_Ym4uapowCFQUrlAodN0Tyzg

    or here:

Hi, I've been using AVG free for years, no problems even Which? magazine have recommended it.

    free download

You get daily updates and can set it to automatically scan daily as well. It does slow PC operation a bit while scanning so I disable the autoscan and run a scan while I go out, or stop for lunch.

listen to mike, AVG is brilliant and is 100% free! AVG is a virus scanner & protects your PC against them. I would also get a firewall to secure your PC, try Comodo firewall, its free and easy to use. www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
