I thought this was meant to be a friendly forum?......why not just say that you think it's better to keep the sludge? I don't think I be asking for advice again.

Use a Stanley knife to cut out the whole liner in sections. Then the water will just drain away.
So no worries about sludge. It's a good fertilizer, particularly for acid loving plants. Then fill it in with top soil.

No offence, but I don't think it's that big a job.

Morning Wise One, did you remove the liner or just left it there and back filled?

Good morning @intel I had to jump down in to the pond(and at my age that's no mean feat;) I then with a Stanley knife cut as much liner as I could, which left about 2ft at the bottom circumference around the pond and removed the surplus liner and then filled it in,enjoy your day my friend:smile:

ps the pond was 4ft deep originally:smile:

I had a raised pond on the patio a few years ago. It had an underlay and a liner. When I decided to make it into a flower bed I removed the water and relocated the insect life and snails. I left underlay and liner in place just cut large slashes through it and left the oxygenator weeds, pebbles, gravel and a layer of accumulated sludge in it and filled it with compost.
