Like a lot of us I have read a few period books, but Richard Herleys The Flint Lord goes back some 5000 years to Southern England.

    Quote from http://www.richardherley.com/FL.html

Driven by the sinister forces of his own heritage, Brennis Gehan Fifth, Lord of Valdoe, is planning the genocide of the nomadic tribes who impede the spread of his empire in the land that was southern England of 5,000 years ago. With his army swelled by foreign mercenaries he prepares to march through the snows to annihilate the nomads' retreat in their winter camp.

I can recommend this story. It has a vivid story line and opens up your eyes and mind to life of our ancestors some 5000 years ago !

Just finished Tess of the D'Urbevilles and about about to read Jude the Obscure next.

I wonder about our early history, I know a few things are written about pre-roman but do get frustrated that we think our history only began when the Romans turned up lol, so will find that book you mentioned Capney and have a try of it.

Review of my latest read written by Matthew Reilly entitled Area 7.
If you like action in your stories then this is a read for you..
Its about saving the president of the USA
Its about preventing the destruction of several US cities.
Its about stopping the release of a race selective sinovirus.
I best not say any more or I shall spoil the show.
This story gets a 10/10 for me and a big thumbs up for an all action read.

I have not updated this thread for awhile as I have been very busy reading all of Australia's No1 best-seller Matthew Reilly.
Every reading minute lately has been with 10 books by this author.

One word will describe his stories...
    ….Supercharged....
Its all action almost from page one with characters ending up in impossible situations and escaping to continue their quest.
The actions are woven with real life facts and makes you wonder the amount of research that must have gone into each story.
If you like action on a par with James bond, Indians Jones and the Da-Vinci code
then the Jack West series is for you.
Make sure you read these in this order.
    SEVEN ANCIENT WONDERS
    THE SIX SACRED STONES
    THE FIVE GREATEST WARRIORS.

There are four more novels featuring a character called Scarecrow
    HELL ISLAND
    SCARCROW
    AREA 7
    ICE STATION

    Three stand alone
    HOVER CAR RACER
    TEMPLE
    CONTEST

I can recommend all these will keep up late and be your friend on a long journey.

Have recently taken some books from my son's bookshelf as I had to take them down for decorating so I have read four of his Robert Harris books,

    Enigma(WW2 Bletchley code thriller).

Fatherland (Police crime thriller set in a present day Germany which won the war).

Archangel (Slow thriller about Stalin's lost diary).

Imperium (Early political life of the Roman orator Cicero).

I have just got Pompeii so will start that one soon.

I will have a look at Matthew Rielly, Robert, as I am always on the lookout for something new.:thumb:

Been awhile since I have updated my reading habits.
I have spent some time reading a few books by Dale Brown. (Not Dan Brown)
Dale is ex USA Air Force and has written about possible ugly scenarios with nations clashing in the most ugly of ways....nuclear...
He shows a clear knowledge of the techicalities of aircraft, which for me makes for a most interesting read.
Probable a good read for the boys with plenty of action using really high tech toys.
    Titles so far are:
    Shadows of Steel
    Chain of Command
    Night of the Hawk
    Sky Masters.
There are others in his writings that I have not managed to track down yet.

I`m not usually the kind of guy who watches police dramas on the telly. I simple cannot get into them.
But, I have just read two stories by Peter James, both criminal / police based with the usual family issues thrown into the story line.
The action takes place in and around the Brighton area so can be related two quite readily rather than the usual vastness of the USA.
I have to give the two titles:
DEAD SIMPLE and LOOKING GOOD DEAD an 8 out of 10 score.
Thankyou Peter James.. I shall be looking out for other titles from you.

Agree with you Capney about Peter James having read the books - another worth a read is Mark Billingham whose hero 'DI Thorne' is currently gracing our TV screens.

Been awhile since I have updated my reading habits, so here goes.

Never really been a Stephen King fan but I thought I should give him a go.

    The Long Walk
The Long Walk is depressing, exhausting and brutal. But ultimately it is a beautiful story that makes you aware how great it is to be alive.

    Salems Lot
One of Stephens first books which I`m sure we all know about.
Superb descriptive writing of a US small town, its inhabitants and their way of life sets the scene for the gruesome events that are about to unfold.
A master Vampire moves into the town
A good night time read for the nervous.
But, after the big build up to the final fight with the master I found the battle was disappointing, I was maybe expecting more.
