Not the wash tub so much but I remember mangles Harry. Blimey, I'm getting old! :heehee:

Thanks Silu, FC and Harry. :) Buying cheap is another stumbling block. When I sell, part of my house contents will temporarily be going into storage, so it doesn't really matter what I buy. I'm thinking at this point it would be better to buy something decent in a sale now than chancing losing out on this when I've moved. Oh, why can't things be straight forward?

Something to think about - if you buy something cheap now, it will come with a 12 month warranty; so, if you choose to leave it behind you, you haven't spent a fortune and lost a load of money. If you do take it with you, and it lasts you until this time next year, by which time you should hopefully be settling in to your new home, then you are back at the time of the sales again, and have as much chance of picking up something decent at a good price then - delivered, in its packaging, nice and shiny to your new home.

If you go for a decent one now, then it should last you well through the move and years beyond - however, factor in that something may happen beyond your control whilst it is being moved or in storage.

Seven or eight years ago, when we moved out of the flat we had a washing machine that cost us £900; we were moving ourselves with the help of family, so weren't too concerned about stuff being damaged, and we made sure that the transit bolts were sitting ready for the washing machine. Father in law installed the transit bolts, and the washing machine was transported to the new house.

When I removed the transit bolts, one of them felt really 'odd', and basically popped out too easily, whilst another was an absolute sod - in short, when father in law had put them in, two or more were not completely locked. The washing machine ran for a further six months or so, but it was clear that it wasn't a happy machine by the noises it was making, and in the end it went out with a hell of a bang as the captive bearing on the direct drive motor failed. A new washing machine was required.

Now, whilst I of course wish you all the very best for the move, problems can arise - things can fall over or be bashed/damaged whilst in storage or in transit. So, before you spend your money, ask yourself if you want to spend the money now and give yourself a really good chance at another 10 or so years of trouble free use, taking the risks of damage etc in your stride? Or go for an el cheapo which will get you through 12-24 months, and if it gets busted in transit then so be it.

PS - never worry about missing something in the sales, there are so many sales on nowadays it is hard to get something that isn't on sale one way or another.

Thanks FC. What you've said makes sense. We'll have a look tomorrow and weigh them all up. We only have five places on the island that sell washing machines, two of those I wouldn't touch, two of the others are overpriced, the remaining one is good if I find what I'm looking for. I'll let you know what I decide. :)

        Bosch 1400 spin 8kg only £249 @john lewis 2 year warranty,sorted.
Dismantle the miele selling some of its parts on ebay which will pay towards the bosch ?
Someone somewhere will be desperate for a part to repair an expensive machine cheaply.

There's no John Lewis here @WeeTam and it's unlikely they will deliver to the island. If they did they would charge me for delivery and it would probably take weeks.

The one place I was relying on has decided to stop selling appliances. Now I've only got Curry's (not if I can help it!) and a couple of smaller shops that work out more expensive. I'm also finding it difficult to find anything cheap apart from Indesits and their washing cycle times are horrendous. The wash tub and mangle are looking increasingly more attractive. :heehee:

If you do replace don't forget that Euronics agents are a real alternative to the national chains. Get your prices from the chains and then approach the Euronics agent and they will as a rule match that price.

Euronics is a buying group that allows independent electrical retailers access to the same buying power as the large national chains.

Plus you are almost guaranteed that the service from a Euronics or other independent is going to be significantly better

I'd not heard of Euronics before @longk and oddly I decided to visit a shop in the link you posted before I'd seen your post. It was a final attempt to avoid Curry's, the only 'chain' store here for appliances.

You'll all be pleased to know I bought a machine today so your time hasn't been wasted. :) It's one of the cheaper Zanussi's but it's going to cost me more for delivery and removal of my old machine, I've not really gained on the price but have peace of mind. It's being delivered Tuesday.

Thanks everyone for your help, it's much appreciated. :dbgrtmb:

Zanussi are actually not too bad @Sheal - part of the Electrolux group nowadays, and even if it is one of the cheaper ones it will definitely be better (at least in reliability terms) than the equivalent Hotpoint/Indesit/Candy rubbish.

                    Happy washing :blue thumb:

I've had two Zanussi washing machines in the past and as middle range machines are pretty reliable. In fact my fridge, freezer, dishwasher and tumble dryer are all Zanussi's, I didn't buy them because they are, but because they were all the best options at the time. My fridge and freezer are about 12 years old, so I'm treating those gently. What worries me now is the adage about things occurring in threes.:)

A little electrical shop , Aspull Domestics , near where I lived branched out into a unit under the Euronics umbrella . I think a lot of small retailers branched out like this after the demise of Comet stores. When our Bosch washer went belly up they delivered and fitted a new Hotpoint the following day. Superb service from Euronics :dbgrtmb:
