    The piano :blue thumb:

Watched Sydney Poitier, Spencer Tracey in "Guess who's coming home for dinner " and enjoyed it .... Brave film for the time!

Never seen it, but In The Heat Of The Night is a classic.
Sidney Poitier is actually Sir Sidney Poitier. He was born in a commonwealth country and knighted way back in the 70's or 80's.

I don't think they were on the market in those days. Anyway, it was a government department and they wouldn't want to spend money on a lampshade. It must have cost them quite a lot jus replacing that bulb each week! :hate-shocked:

I take your point about availability......but cost wise it could have been offset against the cost of the bullets?
I suppose that just making a ding sound.....isn't good tele?

I think they used the bulb for target practice because they always set it swinging before shooting it.

Can anyone recommend a really good WWII film, portraying some real heroic events/characters? Not the Dambusters though....seen it.
I was talking to my mate Tinkerbell the other day, and he said his dad was a prisoner during WWII. I think he was in a well known prison. Not sure if you know much about WWII?

'A Bridge To Far' or the 'Longest Day', they are both about events on D-Day.

I'm assuming you want films based on real events/characters. These are in no particular order but are all good films.

'Schindler's List' (although it was really his wife who was the unsung hero!)

'Bridge On The River Kwai' (excellent film that stretches the truth to make a better story)

'Ice Cold In Alex' (well dramatized story based on truth)

'The Great Escape' (a rather over the top, enjoyable film based on truth)

'Battle of Britain' (uses some actual film from the aerial battle)

'Patton' (glorified story of this over the top character)

'Midway' (good romp about the Battle of Midway)

'633 Squadron' (fictional squadron depicting some of the real events that occurred)

'Battle of The Bulge' (based on fact but a condensed version of what really happened)

Thanks @shiney, I don't think I have seen 'PATTON', so that would be my first choice. I had to watch Schindler over 3 days, because it was soooo long :thud:
                  Good film though.
I text Tinkerbell last night. He thinks the prison his dad was sent to during the war, was Wormwood scrubs, but he got thrown out for the government to move in, or something like that.

Although heavily fictionalised, and despite my own indifference towards Spielberg, it is the definitive film about the holocaust (IMO).
On a similar theme, The Diary Of Anne Frank form the late fifties is very good.

                  A stone cold classic film!

Reach For The Skies - the biopic about Douglas Bader is good.

But if you want to find out about WW2 (as opposed to being entertained) then seek out the World At War series on DVD.
