I googled the av monthly rainfall for Bristol and calculated the 5 months between May to Sept is an average of 57mm/month. To fill a standard size 200 litre butt each month would require a 1.8 x 1.8m (6 feet x 6 feet) shed (or equivalent rain harvesting area) complete with guttering, downpipe and butt.

For the cost of that set up there would be 1m3 (5 × 200 litres) of 'free' water p.a., but googling Bristol water charges suggests their supply cost to be only £1.46/m3 (which might not include their disposal charge?), so an extremely long time back period.

I think I am planning to use a green recycling bin that is no longer being collected by the council. putting a tap into it shouldnt be too expensive. just need to empty the bit of rubbish that is in the bottom.

your maths kinda went over my head but then again it is 11.30pm and I am tired.

if I dont save a massive amount of money it will save me walking though the house with a watering can (as kitchen is at the front of the house)

also there isnt enough space or money to get a shed in my garden.
