    May I add a comment here... there is a Vicarage where I spend a fairly short time of my week "fiddling" about in the garden and there is a massive Philadelphus in full flower right now - and when I say full flower I mean prolific! Have I, or anyone else for that matter, pruned the thing in the past 5 years... the answer is no. It comes as a surprise to me but these "guys" don't always necessarily benefit from pruning at all.

    Roy some of us have a limited amount of room I would love to let things grow to their full potential but not really practical, I think you can obtain the same effect as you describe if you scale down your plantings with careful pruning.
