Whiley, you & Helen are making me jealous [IMG] i have a weight problem but it's mainly around the middle. a few years ago i got mistaken as pregnant quite often, now i'm too old for that [IMG]
Apparently, the middle is the worst for women. i love food. know i eat too much in one go but cutting down is hard.
keep it up Whiley, the main thing i think is that if you have a bad day, don't give up. that's what the 'experts' always say. you can do it. i wish you every success.
    keep us informed.

    cheers

Weigh yourself every day. I do it in the morning after I have been to the loo. My wife reckons you are at your lightest then first thing in the morning. After a while you will hopefully notice that your weight remains more or less the same. I can see the difference if I do a lot of work, don't do much physical activity or eat a bit more. Weight loss or gain is simply a matter of changing the equation. Quite simply you have to burn off more calories than you take in.
At present my weight is stable and is OK but if it were to rise even slightly then I know I have to either eat less or do more work.
After a while your body gets used it and you can lose cravings. If I want a sweet then I eat an apple. Eat loads of fruit and veg, they will fill you up and don't have as many calories as meat or snacks. Also they don't have saturated fats so are better than most things for your heart. Your body may get to the stage where you lose the urge to nibble things, snacks are out. Get rid of biscuits, crisps etc.If the rest of the family think thats hard then tough. They will benefit from not eating that rubbish. Try to eat proper food, instead of the processed rubbish that is full of fat, excess salt and too much damned sugar. I even started making our own bread and I cannot believe how much salt there is in ordinary bread by comparison. My wife thinks my bread is brilliant - all I do is follow the recipe, but i make all our own. I just have to make sure i don't eat too much of it.
Best of luck. If I can lose weight, and it did not seem too painless, then I am pretty sure you can.
Try this link, very useful as a guide.

Geoff, you're wife is absolutely correct. You're at your lightest in the morning 'cause you've been perspiring and exhaling all night without replacing the liquids. When you've had a couple of cups of tea you've replaced the fluids and your weight will go up again. I don't think it makes much difference provided you weigh yourselve at the same time of the day. Well it looks better if you weigh yourself at the lightest point of the day. ;) and its not too much trouble to strip off when you only have your jim jams on.

I have to say that I tend to be at my lightest around luchtime, but hey could be the water tablets [IMG] I always feel bloated first thing but that Actimel stuff seems to help I must say.

The trick is to always weight yourself at the same time and ONLY once a week. I did a little study and the difference in weight at various times can be massive

Geoff, you have just posted the very advice I was going to give as obviously we must have the same ideas on eating and weight loss.
Skimmed milk, no added sugar or salt, NO crisps or bisuits(it doesn't hurt to cut out some of the food that you really like), snack on dried or fresh fruit if necessary, home made bread and rolls, all excellent ways to lose weight and improve your fitness as long as it is coupled with excercise. I have lost two stone in just over two years, ok that's not fast but I didn't intend to go on a set diet as such I just changed my eating habits and I do go to a Gym twice a week. My weight is stable and I still stick to the same eating habits, I don't miss the things I cut out. Willpower comes into it and that is where some folk stumble.
You seem keen Whiley, I'm sure you will be shedding some pounds(kilos!) soon. ;)

Strongy, I've stayed out of this because I've retired but I did used to have a certain professional interest in patients' diet. Your suggestions are exactly right. It's a shame that people who need to lose weight think you can safely do it at 3 kilos (about 6.6 lbs) a month. As you know, you can't. If you can't stomach fully skimmed milk, which a lot of people think is like white water, then semi-skimmed is miles better than full fat which we won't have in the house. Oh and of course it goes without saying to go very careful on processed foods and fried stuff, funnily enough processed food is worse than the odd piece of shallow fried fish.

I always thought skimmed milk looked like white water and only drank semi, In-House Advisor was recommended having it when she had gall stones some 5 years ago and we both started having it, whether it has been improved/altered over the years I don't know but it didn't taste like water and we got used to it within a week even on cereals. I don't like semi now but I have to put up with it when I'm out.(I don't like or eat anything with cream in it anyway so it was easier for me).
A lot of people don't realise how much sugar is in alcohol and if they did they probably wouldn't cut down, not just because of the sugar.
As we both agree, its not just about diet alone, f-plan, Atkins ... quick fix rubbish. Change diet, excercise (more), willpower and patience together should help to reduce weight.
For people who can't bear to cut out certain foods just cutting down what they eat will help.

If all my patients (I think the new term is clients - yuk) had taken that attitude Strongy, I might not have taken early retirement (yes I would :D ) . The joke is, I'm the one with IBS. [IMG]

In all honesty if you really put your mind to it losing weight is a breeze.

I can't understand people who moan 'I don't really eat much but the weight still piles on'.

Some people need to get real with theirself, eat the right foods and don't reach for a chocolate bar when they get the munchies but have an apple of something like that instead.

It worked for me and I was even able to drink a couple of glasses on full fat milk a few times a week so naughty but then again so very nice too!
